Thanks for asking.

I used a D500 and 70-300 AF-P lens at 300mm, raw file cropped and adjusted in post processing. The setting are irrelevant since your situation will vary.

I don't know what you use but If your camera allows, set the exposure to manual and ISO to Auto. Use a flash in most cases and the sync speed will be set for you, use ttl. If you have High Speed Sync, for birds, set it at 1/500s or even more if the flash has enough power for the distance. Obviously a tele lens is ideal for distance shots. Set the aperture for the DOF wanted or needed. A DOF calculator is indispensable.

Stay within your flash range and you will seldom miss a shot. Worst case you may need to clean up some noise if the ISO gets too high. I use Topaz DeNoise but any noise removal routine will work.
