Those of us old enough will remember one of the great NFL quarterbacks.

Morris Berman, a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette photographer, took the attached photo in September 1964, after Y.A. Tittle, in his final season with the Giants, was hit hard by Steelers defensive end Big John Baker. It's still considered one of the most iconic sports photos ever made.

So sad, another part of my "childhood," gone. I wonder how much brain damage he suffered, if at all?

I don't know, but he live to 90. My Dad played back in the era of leather helmets and no face masks (Michigan 37-39). Before the equipment changed, the game was different. Tackling was done using the shoulder. I don't think Dad ever complained about concussions (they played both ways back then). He did have a teammate who broke his nose a bunch of times. Even the line lined up differently. Bottoms down heads up (at least in the 30's), so blocking on the line was not going to involve as much head knocking as there is now. Players are much bigger now, as well. Many things about the game today make it more dangerous.

I watched him and the Giant games just about every Sunday. I was always impressed how, after every sack, blitz, or tackle, he would just get up, get to the huddle and keep on going! He was a great competitor: tough, persistent, and determined.

Thanks for posting that. It certainly caught my interest. I was a die-hard Giant fan when Y.A. was with the Giants. I Googled your reference of Morris Berman and came up with the photographic history of his iconic image. Very interesting, partiularly for members of UHH. Here is the link I found:

Sorry he is no longer with us. I remember going to games in Yankee Stadium and seeing him quarterback the team. Fond memories of days long gone

I just watched Y.A.'s speech at Kyle Rote's funeral. It wasn't too many years ago. He seemed firmly in control of his sp ech and mental faculties. Being a long-suffering Browns fan, I remember Y.A.'s last year because of the fierce rivalry then between Browns and Giants. That turned out to be Cleveland's magical season, as they beat the heavily favored Unitas-led Colts 27-0. Ah, the good, ole days!
