Hello all posted yesterday looking for feedback on the canon 5diii and sigma 120-300mm sport lens. I currently have a 7d markii and a tameron 70-200mm 2.8 zoom. I shoot 99% hockey and baseball. The 200mm is a good lens but just not enough. I love the burst rate of the 1dx but $$ is out of range unless a used model. I have a 7500 budget. Please help me find the Best options for my money.

The 7d ll is one of the best sports bodies but I couple the canon 100-400 with it and it is magic. I rarely us the extender with it except for wildlife shots. Great for baseball when you are not in the media box.

Ronz is right. To get those action shots you want the high frame per second rate of the 7Dll.
But, with a $7500 budget you should be able to get a good used 1DX and an EF 100-400L II plus a EF 1.4 III teleconverter.

The problem with the 7DII is that the sensor is older technology and a crop, so your low light performance with hockey will be noisy. Personally, I would go with a full frame. Either a used 1DX or a new 5DIV. the 5DIV will not get you as many frames, but it will do well with the low light and at 7 fps, it is no slouch. Also, with the 30mp you will be able to crop if using a 70-200 2.8. The 100-400mm II would be a great lens, but just not as great in low light.

Any suggestions to find a reliable used 1dx? Teaming that with a sigma 120-300mm sport lens is this a good long term investment for sports shooting

As someone who has owned the 5DIII (and loved it!), and shot a lot of soccer and basketball, I have to fully endorse it. It may not have the fastest burst rate, but the focus is lightning quick, which can really give you a great sequence of fully focused action shots. Your Tamron 70-200 will perform very well with it. I'd have to agree that the 100-400IIL would be a good pairing with that. I also owned that and the combination was hard to beat in terms of focus speed and IQ.
The only reason i no longer own them is transition to Fuji x-t2.

Lumoid has a used 1DX II for $4700. They also have used 6D listed for $950 and a 5D III for $1649.

The 7D is a crop sensor so your 200 is really 300(assuming the crop factor of 1.5, too lazy to look it up). The 5DIII is a full sensor so you are still stuck at 300 for a max. You just getting a different body and not much different FPS. if the sigma can fit on the 7D you know have 450MM. I'd stick with the 7D and simply get a longer lens especially for sports.

Your 200 will always be a 200 no matter what body you put it on. The only thing being cropped by the smaller sensor is the image projected by the lens.

As we old timers know, a full frame collects more light than a crop sensor, all else being equal. However, a Canon crop sensor appears to have 60% more reach for a given focal length. The 7D MK II has an older sensor than the 80D. The 80D is rated at 7fps, slightly slower than the 7 but fairly fast. For comparison:
