The Gray Jay became the National bird of Canada in November 2016.

Interesting. I feel honored now to have seen your national bird! Seriously, I love Canada (my Dad was from Toronto, and my wife and I have traveled extensively up there), so a nice connection.

I lived just outside of Toronto until 2000 and then moved south. Saw a lot of changes from my youth before leaving. Love where I am now.

Yes, definitely a gray jay or camp robber -- been around them most of my life here in the Northwest. They are very tame and will practically, if not actually, eat out of your hand.

I submitted a screenshot of your bird photo to birdsnap.com, and they ID it as a grey jay, as others have suggested. Kingbird was a good first guess; we have them here in KY and they are fun to watch, too.

I don't know what he is, but he's cute and this is a good shot, cabunit!

Another good one is Cornell Lab's Merlin, which also has photo ID and over 1500 species for US and Canada.

You have to play fair though. I uploaded a picture of a Chihuahua and Merlin ID'd it as a Cooper's hawk.

Thank you--the truth is that he came down right next to me and I shot quickly without changing exposure settings (this is Mr. Manual here) and it was pretty badly underexposed. Thanks to the magic of Lightroom, I got him at least to a recognizable state! And, as you can see from all the responses, he/she is a gray (or grey) jay.

Please--no flying Chihuahuas! Thanks for the info!
