A 28-300 on a FF is a better option IQ wise. But 18-300 on a 7100 should be ok. I personally prefer 18-300 on. D5600. This combo is much lighter and gives the same IQ.

From the brief research I did, there are two versions of the Nikon 18-300mm lens: the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras which retails for around $700, and the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mmf 3.5-5.6G ED Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras which retails for just under $1,000.
I'm not sure which one you're considering, but the $300 delta suggests there is better glass in the f/3.5-5.6G than in the f/3.5-6.3G. If you're shopping, make sure you know what you're getting.

hi guys - i have a D5600 AND A D7100 - lens i have been experimenting with are the 55-200mm nikkor and a 70-300mm G - both are good but my thoughts are if i move the two on would a better quality 18-300mm dx vr be a better allround lens and worth the investment - main subjects are water birds and landscape

Yes. I used one all the time when I had a D7100. Look at Sigma's equivalent also.

hi grenaderphoto - i have a 70-300mm Sigma i like the photos i take with it but it is a very heavy beast - not picked up a Sigma 18-300mm but wouldnt that be a similar weight ?
i have looked online but so far havent found a site to compare weights

If a range of 27-450 mm will cover what you will be taking images of then I would say your covered. Personally I like a wider option, not that big of tele for a walk about.

I owned the D7100 and the older Nikkor 18-300mm. It's a great combo. I gave this to my girlfriend, who uses it all the time. I can't tell you if the older 18-300mm is better or not? Do a Google vs. the against the other and see what the experts say!

the newer one only weighs 19 oz.! If you get the new 10-20 Nikon w/a zoom, (8 oz.), you've got 10 - 300 covered for $1,000 and 27 oz.! Amazing what they'e doing with optics these days....

I am kind of shy away from lenses that have such a wide zoom range. For the D7100, I would pick the old Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 as an all around lens.

I've had the 18-300 3.5-5.6 for some time and it is a wonderful lens. It produces excellent photos in a good Nikon DX camera.
