Am I expecting to much for a bird this far away and moving ? I think this photo is terrible . Any suggestions on how I can do better please advise .

Cannon 60 D , w/ 100 x 400 L , auto focus set to spot , stabilizer set on 2 for panning , 1/800 sec at f/5 ISO 640 shot at 130 mm I was using a tripod and panning very fast .

Is that first image cropped or is it as it came out of the camera? If it is already considerably cropped then I go along with what has been said but if the top image has not been cropped then it is definitely not a keeper.

Clearly the second image is cropped and it is showing how bad the first one is, but as I said, if the first is also cropped then I agree with what has been said. :)

thank you both for looking , the first one is straight out the camera , I would have expected a better quality when cropping like I did . I thought the 100 400 was MAGIC ?lol

Don't knock it yet - practice more with it. You may be surprised with future shots.

The bird was very far !( and moving fast )

That creates a very challenging opportunity for a photographer.

Any camera and lens would be challenged as well.

Next time turn the IS off and shoot at 400mm. The reason to turn the IS off is that it slows down the focus rate of the lens and you really don't need it with such a high shutter speed. You should get a much better image that will take a little cropping. You might also want to try panning hand held as it is easier to hold the subject in the field of view. With shutter speeds as high as you were using it shouldn't be a problem to get good shots. Also make sure your camera is set to focus tracking and high speed frame rate.

Next time try your auto focus set to a1 servo and 1/2500sec f/8, and hand hold.
regards, Alf.
