I attended a wedding today . Professional photographer had 3 assistants . The lead photographer had a Canon camera , so did the #1 assistant . Both had Canon L lenses . As I approached the altar I see the other two people setting up their cameras on tripods , Canon L lenses , but surprisingly mounted into Sony Dslr's .
What am I missing here ? Are Sony cameras that good ?
Did they need an adapter to mount the Canon L lenses to the Sony's ?
Just curious .

Yes, they need adapter and yes, sony is that good. But probably it was not Sony dslr, but Sony mirrorless.

If we look at the 2017 market (i.e., what are the customers saying by their actions), Sony has passed Nikon as #2 as full-frame cameras.

Yes Sony is that good. The good Metabones adapter for the Canon lenses runs about $400. Some folks claim the Canon L lenses work better on the Sony than on their Canons. However Canon lenses can't take advantage of Sony's eye focus feature which I think would be great to have for a wedding shoot.
The Sony's you saw on tripods may have been A7Ss which are optimised for low light video.

Yes, Sony s that good. Also, at a wedding, if the cameras were high end mirrorless (A7RII or A9), the silent shutter would be greatly appreciated by the performing official and the congregation.

Don't knock Sony......! Their whole range is good.

They came into the camera business late.....so started without all the middle aged crap telling them what they 'should do'. So they didn't.....and that makes the difference.

have fun

Sony may not have been involved in the film era, but they have been pioneers in electronic / digital photography for decades. Remember those old Mavica cameras of the 80's and 90's?

Ah, that explains having the Sony close to the ceremony.

The silent shutter is not the only reason. I have ditched a ton of Canon cameras and lenses for Sony. Sony makes an awesome camera and their lenses are excellent also.
It's my understanding that Sony makes the sensors for Canon and Nikon!!! So why is it so hard to accept the fact that Sony is in the pro league category.

I am a Nikon shooter, but I also have a Sony a6500 mirrorless camera. I love it. I have a 70-200 f4 lens that is just awesome. This image was taken hand held, iso 1250 f7.1 @1/2000

Sony is the new Leica. Small, lightweight, mirrowless, packed with some of the latest technology, and capable of outstanding results.
