I really liked the monochrome version, but this is gorgeous! Love the shadow-play across his face. Not sure how i feel about the sky though . . . THAT may have blended a little better in the mono version. Here is almost detracts from His Majesty. :)

I like both monochrome and colour - but for different reasons. One thing about the colour version: I'm using a laptop, and you know that when you tip the screen back, the images become a bit more dark and contrasty. On this one, I didn't like the sky, and the image seemed to have lost some of the strength. But when I pushed the screen back to more of an angle, it really came "up" nicely. I don't know how it looks to you, but the sky is much better on a slightly darkened image. And the lion seems to be a bit more "macho" also. All screens are different, so perhaps this isn't an issue to anyone else.

Now that is simply mag-damn-nificent!
my only quibble is that I'd prefer his nose be horizontally centered so that his gaze would come from a bit left of center...thus gazing into, rather than out of the image.

Impact : strong, gripping! 5
Technical: focus, exposure/tonal control: excellent 5
Composition:3.5
Total: 13.5/15

Withal, a striking image (wish it were in my portfolio!)

Thanks a lot, Dave. I have adjusted the composition as you suggested, even though it forced me to change the format somewhat, and it is better.
