great shot of the old fortress.

One of the props seems to be a little feathered, I wonder if you could of reduced the shutter speed, still captured the plane as you did but given the props a stronger statement of movement.

Just am idea. The shot is very good and as a screen on your computeriamsure it takesoff and lands on a regular basis.

I found that 1/160 or 1/200 gave me good prop blur. the only problem was getting sharp images at those slow shutter speeds.

A good friend of mine is a retired Air Force photographer. When I was trying to figure out if I should spring for a DSLR, he sent me this photo. He took it with a D5000 (12MP) shot RAW with 70-300 EDIF VR. This shot was down sampled quite a bit from RAW to Jpeg. He took this shot while sitting in a small inflatable boat! He speaks very highly of this lens.

Fairly new to full frame but long time serious hobbyist. Shooting with a D750 and have been using my AF-S 70-200 at a couple of air shows. Thinking of getting a lens with longer reach and am considering these three lenses:

Nikkor AF-S 200-500 F5.6 E ED
Tamron SP 150-600 f5-6.3 Di VC USD G2
Sigma 150-600 F5-6.3 DG OS HSM ( maybe even the S)

Money not the main criteria. Like the 600 but have no experience with lenses other than Nikon since the old film days in the 70s!

Know everyone has their favorites, but would appreciate any comments, especially any problem areas. Thanks..Have a safe and wonderful time shooting

I would be more inclined to shoot with a smaller/lighter more maneuverable lens hand held or with a bodypod - like the 80-400 Nikon or the 70-200 with TC........and you WILL need a zoom !

Got a chance to play with the Sigma 150-600 (on a Canon D1) courtesy of a co-worker. That is definately too heavy for me to use for an all day airshow or a night show followed by a longer day show. At 74, still working full time as a construction project manager, I'm blessed with good health but am "not as spry as I used to be".

Read all the posts so far and followed lots of the links. Y'all sure gave me a lot to think about. I'm more of a "serious amateur" with no intention of going pro. I do find that a "big camera" gets you lots of places that you might be otherwise excluded. Being a pilot also helps at air shows. Most of what i've done so far would indicate to me that a tripod will be more of a hinderance than a help. I do have a monopod, so it is light enough to pack without too much hassle.

Leaning heavily at this point to getting a D7500 as a backup camera and using my 70-200 on it for handheld panning from the ground and my D750 with the 24-120 for the walkaround stuff and any more air to air that I manage to talk my way into. If I go the D7500 route, Adorama has a better package deal than B&H. Any complaints or complements about them? All my current stuff came from a local Bestbuy, so haven't done the mail order bit yet.

Thanks, again, to all that have taken time to give me your thoughts. All have been seriously considered ( even maybe going to a Canon as the backup camera, though that means all new lenses). My wife already thinks I'm way overboard on all this. By the way, sure liked all the pictures posted here and elsewhere.

Decided to blend lots of different advice. Went with getting a Nikon D7500 body and a Sigma 100-400 FX lens. Now I'll have a light weight camera to do the ground to air shots and still have my D750 with the 24-120 for air to air and walk around. Only issue now is how to carry two rigs! Looking at double sling straps but hesitant to buy online. Do have a neat camera store (Lakeside Camera) near New Orleans, only an hour or so away, so will see what they have to help out.
Get my new rig in a week or so and will post my test results to see if I'm happy. Again, more in the realm of serious amatuer but anxious to advance my skill set. More as it happens, film at 11!..
