If it were the tool needed for the job at hand, absolutely.

You on the other hand clearly have no need for such a tool so why even ask such an inane question?

The test for sports photographers is something like

For a book on photography would you pay

$50.00 without blinking?

$50.00 after thinking about it?

Refuse to pay $50.00?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you are not a sports photographer. A sports photographer looks at the book and, if they think it is something they need, they buy it without looking at the price. A minimal sports setup is in the tens of thousands, worrying about the cost of a book just does not enter into it.

I just spent $6,000.00 on a camera and didn't blink at all because I also spent $11.499.00 on a lens. You can't take it with you. What do you pay for a car these days, more then I paid for my house over 40 years ago.

I popped down $6500 for the D5 and didn't think twice. Worth every dime.

Steve, I bought the 1DXMKII but for only $6,000.00 and it's well worth it to me. It was an upgrade from the 5DMKII. Waiting to see when and how much the 7DMKIII will cost and if there aren't enough changes to warrant a change I will stick with the 7DMKII. I know what floats my boat.

If I was a professional photographer and the 5 grand camera was needed to do my job and better than the camera I was currently using, sure I would. If you own a auto repair shop and one of your 5 grand diagnostic tools breaks, wouldn't you spend the money to replace it.

As a now retired mechanic, I have about $50,000 in tools and equipment in my garage and basement. After 48 years of turning wrenches, you accumulate a ton (literary) of stuff.
Cameras, lenses, filters, flashes, tripods and other stuff over the past 40 years amounts to about $20,000. I sold almost all my film stuff years ago after going digital and considered that a learning experience. I bought my present tool boxes 18 years ago for $ 7,800. That was a necessity as I outgrew the boxes I bought 45 years ago.
Tools you work with are what pays the bills for your life, family, home, vehicles and hobbies. I've been blessed with all of these and never looked back. I'll be lucky if I sell all the tools for $20,000 and buy a bigger boat or a new Canon EOS-1 whatever comes next along with the biggest L lens that allows me to see into the future.
As for Chris T, how does someone who signed on here 5 days ago post 417 messages in such a short time? I guess he has a lot to say...

I have a number of screw mount lenses and cameras. About a year ago I bought a Vivitar SLR at a monthly swap meet at one of the high schools here in the beach city of Torrance in Los Angeles County. The camera is straight manual, no AE or autofocus, and was in the original foam in the original box, apparently unused. The seller said he had tried to sell it at another location for $20, but nobody even looked at it and so he sold it to me for $10 and I have been using it successfully ever since, usually with the classic Pentax 50MM 1.4 SMC Takumar lens, sometimes with a #2 closeup filter since I can no longer hold steady my other lenses. I am 85 years old, and I would not use a tripod unless my life depended on it. I am not a rich man but I could afford 50 yards for a camera, but why?

Only in the current USA's cultural wasteland/robber barron reality would a 1%er question be even posited. they spend 5K on a bottle of wine with nary a blink.

I believe in the old rule "Buyer Beware" and yes I would blink a few times for sure.

Actually, I would not blink twice. Of course, if I am putting out $2K, $5K, $10K, or whatever, I would have already figured out my needs for such and therefore would not even flinch a bit as I put my money (or credit card) down.

Put that kind of money down without any true idea why? I would be shaking in my boots and sweating bullets! I would hope someone would quickly show me to the hospital for the hopelessly insane.

Depends on what kind of photographer you are and whether or not you can afford it.

You are right to a certain point, but take the analogy to carpentry, there are all types of saws all for a different purpose or hammers if you will. The camera with more versatility makes it easier for an accomplished photographer to create what he/she is looking for.

I wouldn't. It's more the photographer than the camera.

I'm scrolling down, reading the comments, mildly interested while drinking my tea, only to see the comments get ugly. Why?
