Now that "Cheese" has got us to tell our camera stories, I was wondering what lenses each of us started out with and how that has gravitated toward what is now our "Go To" lens or our favorite lenses and why.

My first lens was a Minolta 50mm f/1.8 that I got when I purchased my Minolta Maxxum 5000i 35mm camera. A 50mm lens was the standard, normal lens that most people purchased for 35mm film cameras. I've purchased a lot of other lenses since then. I now have a similar lens that I use with my Nikon DSLR cameras. It's the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC SP lens.

I use my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 a lot as I can shoot just about anything, and without a flash.
My best keeper volleyball action shots are with that lens and my street/city night pics
are nice and sharp.

My first camera was a Minolta some thing like a X7000, it's been in storage, so the model # may be off, but thats what I remember, lens were the kit 28-55 and a Solgar 55-200. I photographed the fish we caught, back yard get togethers and took some wedding photos. Digital lens wise, I have rented a few prime lens for out-door weddings, my go to lens would be in this order...Sigma 17-70- F2.8-4.5, Pentax 12-24 F4 and a 120-400mm F4.5-5.6
Sigma.

Hard to remember my very first but my favorites were a Soligor 105mm f/2.8 I used with my Miranda G and later, the Nikkor 35mm f/2 for my Nikons.
The 35mm was almost always on one of my Nikon bodies when I worked for the paper.
Zoom lenses were too slow.
Never liked any 50mm lenses.

Kit 18-135 -》 50mm1.8 plastic fantastic -》 75-300mm junk -》 70-200F4L -》 .... once I saw what the 70-200F4L could produce....GAS set in BiG Time -》 all L and ART lenses since and became a pro photog to cover the costs of the addiction

I recommend that everyone keep buying junk lenses otherwise the GAS will get you !

Lol...

When I got my Nikon FM I bought it with Nikon Series E (read "economy) lenses of 28mm, 50mm, and 135mm. Read all the horror stories of how they would yield lousy images and not last a year because they weren't "real Nikkor" lenses. So I learned real early to handle my gear carefully and I still do. Still have the 28mm & 135mm, (which tested great in the trade mags, BTW). They still work great and the images are very sharp. But my "go to" lens these days is a Nikon 28-200mm f3.5-5.6 AF-G. It was only made for 3 years and didn't sell at all. But now it is known to be one of the sharpest lenses Nikon ever produced. I bought a Silver one that looks so cool on my Silver Nikon Df.

I started with a Leitz Elmar f/3.5. Over the years I've collected a considerable number of Nikkor, Zeiss, and Schneider-Kreuzach lenses. Each lens was purchased as a result of a need for a particular project or projects.

A Minolta X-R1 with a 50mm lens was my first SLR camera. No light meter, had to guess at the settings using the guide that came with the film. Lots of badly exposed pictures especially when shooting slide film.

Back in the 1970's my first SLR was a Canon AT-1 with a 50mm 1.8. I later purchased a 50mm 1.4 and thought it was outstanding.

I take mostly travel photos and have 3 lenses, all Canon and all zooms. I have a 10-18, a 28-105, and 70-300 with auto stabilization. My go to lens is the 28-105, which is typically great for most shots when I travel. However, I wouldn't mind investing in some other lenses. Incidentally I found a great camera bag at my local Shutterbug just before my last trip. It holds my camera, all three lenses, extra batteries and SD cards, as well as a small tripod. Best of all it's light and compact. I was in Europe for a month with it and Carried it everywhere.

My first camera was a Brownie box camera, fixed lens. Took great photos for my abilities at the time (6 yrs old). Many years later graduated to Four different Roles, they all had fixed lenses so you had to buy another camera with a different lens. My first Nikon was a Nikormat with a 50mm.
Now it is a D810 with a large assortment of lenses

Too many film lenses to talk about, but when I went digital, my first lens was a Canon EF 24-105 f4L IS. Great "walk around lens" which I still have and use. Recently, I've been gravitating more to fast primes as I find I'm doing a lot of low light shooting. My latest addition is an EF 135 f2L which I love, and I'm thinking of a fast wide prime - maybe an EF 35 f2 IS, which is a bargain in terms IQ/$ (according to DXOMark) or the 24 f1.4L if I can afford it.

My first SLR was a Konica Autoreflex T3 that I bought used in the 1970s... along with Hexanon 57mm f/1.2 and 80-200mm f/3.5 lenses. Over the next ten years I literally wore out those two lenses, eventually had to replace them and gradually added others. In those days, the 80-200mm was pretty good but many zooms really sucked. So I mostly used primes: 21mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2, 85mm f/1.8, 200mm f/4, 300mm f/4.5 with a 1.5X teleconverter.

I pretty quickly developed a preference for a kit like that... which included a couple wide angles, a slightly wider "normal" lens on film/full frame (not a fan of 50mm), and several telephotos. I still have and like that kind of kit today shooting digital (I use both APS-C and full frame cameras), but also use more zooms now.

I had a 50, 35, and a 135, and for my movie camera, numerous zoom lenses in the early 70's, in the 80's I had an 80 and 120 for my Hassie as my most used lenses, now my 70-200 is probably my most used lens and it is my "walk-around" lens (along with the 16-35), because they can handle it all!
