I need some help. I've been shooting with the Canon 7d mk II for over a year and never had a problem pre-viewing photos in windows explorer. I recently bought a 5d mk IV and started shooting photos with it. My problem is, ever since I've shot pics with the 5d mk iv, I can't view those files in windows explorer. I can still view the ones that I shot with the 7d mk ii. My system is windows 10 with 16 gig of memory, 4 gig of video mem, 2tb of hard disk. I've searched the internet and this sight, but haven't found a solution. Hoping someone has ran into this problem before and can offer help.

You need the Microsoft Codec updated. I can't remember where I found it, perhaps a Google search might turn it up.

Hi all, I've tried the links you've given me, however, when I try to download the file, I get an error message stating that this file is not compatible with my current operating system. Thanks, for the suggestions, and I'll continue to search

Sorry, I searched from a Windows 7 machine. Try starting from here to see if you can get there.

This site should answer the problem, a SMALL fee applies to purchase the codecs, but they do work. Microsoft, as far as I can tell, no longer will supply the codec packs.

Windows 10 does not come with windows photo viewer installed. You can download it and review RAW files.

Do you save only RAW files? You could save RAW+JPEG and view the JPEGs in Windows Explorer.
I peruse the JPEGs and if I want to modify an image, I start with the RAW editor.

Thanks, that did it. Can't believe Microsoft doesn't support it's own file explorer?

It does so far for Nikon.

I also checked the Canon site, they apparently stopped providing them with Win 7

Go to this page:

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/

Enter your camera model number, and download DPP. Canon discontinued codecs for separate download in 2012, and now make them part of DPP.

Or you can download Faststone Image Viewer or Irfanview - both of which are free and have the ability to read any raw file.

I've been using Irfanview when somebody handed it to me on a floppy disk. I use it to preview full screen images ane for reading EXIF.

Great suggestion.

You probably need a "codec" update. If you were able to view the 7DII's CR2 files in Windows Explorer (as small, medium or large thumbnails) and in Windows Photo Viewer (enlarged), then you must have some codec already installed. But apparently it's not up to the task handling the CR2s from the newer camera.

I use FastPictureViewer codec. Only costs $10 and works well with a wide variety of RAW file types from many different manufacturers, as well as other file types that Windows normally can't display.

More info here: http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

AFAIK, Canon's own codecs (which only worked with Canon file types) were only ever written in 32-bit versions... They never provided one for use with 64-bit systems.

I've heard that M'soft themselves offers some codecs, but have never used them and don't know the details or how well they work.
