Put up a post please about why they cancelled your order. Could have been due to fraud, no stock, incorrect pricing, their Faux Pas? Let us know the outcome, should be interesting to us readers.

If it was their fraud section that cancelled, then regular customer service SHOULD be out of it. If it was fraud and the fraudster could just call customer service to get it reinstated, that would be a security problem and a REAL reason to complain. You jumped the gun on this.

A global company like Canon should never be shut down for issues like this. (*) Somewhere in the world there should be some representative who could get access to the relevant records. The real issue here is Canon's inability to provide service through communications to their customers. I am sure this has been / will be shortly resolved, but I completely understand why the OP panicked when left hanging overnight.

(*) Yes, I know this was Canon USA, but they are an arm of Canon period.

No. When it is fraud and/or identity theft, you want to number of people who can decide it kept to a minimum.

If they think someone has stolen my identity I want to know now! {not when the people in NYC, or where ever, wander into work}

added: Don't forget they seem to be the only ones thinking something is amiss!

I have been looking into buying a new camera and narrowed it down between the Sony a7R II and the Canon 5D4. I have been a Canon user for over 30 years and have a lot of Canon glass, so finally decided to go with the Canon. I placed my order this afternoon on the Canon USA website and received an order confirmation. Later in the evening I received an email saying "We regret to inform you that your order has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." There was no reason or explanation given. I called customer service, and they told me that their automated system had cancelled the order. They too could not tell the reason. Their "fraud department" was closed for the night, so they said if I placed the order again, it would likely be cancelled again. I called my bank to see if there was a problem with the credit card, and they said the charge had been approved.

Needless to say, I did not anticipate such sloppy service from Canon. You would think that if their algorithm for checking fraud identified a potential problem, a real human would check and perhaps call to try and verify the order.

Has this happened to anyone out there? I'm wondering if this is karma telling me to go with the Sony

If you haven't done it already, I suggest you check your credit report for any activities you don't recognize. Calling your bank about this specific charge is not enough. You are entitled to a free credit report annually from each of the credit reporting agencies. If you stagger the requests you can get a report every couple of months.

You had a fraud issue with Nikon? What was it and how did they handle it?

I've had similar things happen twice. In one case after talking on the phone everything worked out fine. In another case that did involve buying a camera but not from a manufacturer but a private company that sells camera, they had placed an order for a completely wrong camera brand and model. The order was then cancelled by me since they actually did not have the product I wanted, and I never paid for anything. Though even my bank got bad vibes from repeated incorrectly formatted electronic requests for payment. They really had no idea what they were doing. In the end I purchased what I wanted from a real brick & mortar camera store some 75 miles from home. That was OK because it was along the route to another destination.

I'm actually surprised you are having any problems with Canon. I always hear they have the best of customer support. Something is amiss though. The problem might be as simple as an HTML coding error on their web page. Or some weirdness about how you entered your data (even seemingly correctly). I've had time I've had to enter data many times before I was able to actually make a purchase and possibly calling the company to walk me thru it. Times they were even aware there was a glitch. Using PayPal for me avoids a lot of grief and work. They might have done you a favor, perhaps your account has been hacked and you just don't know it yet. Good luck.

So if they took your money, are you going to receive what you ordered and paid for? Even though they said they cancelled your order? Or are they (or have they) returned your money?

My experience with Canon has been 6 stars.........or how about working a problem with me for an hour...as to their order computer capabilities , I had no problems. As to your particular problem, I will bet you are not talking to the right personnel. I'd give them a second chance.

I, personally have nothing but great experience with Canon.

But we will see.

Something similar... but it was my credit card company who denied the charge for several hundred when my credit limit was way way above the limit with a zero balance. They apparently tried to contact me to verify the charge but for some reason we did not connect. I just reordered.

This really isn't about Canon per se. I have only had good luck with them, but I buy a lot of books online, frequently from overseas vendors. I can't tell you how often my orders have been cancelled because the bank decided the amount was too much or simply because it was a German book seller or...... The bank actually has approved the sale, but declined the card. They usually text me at some point and tell me they suspect fraud, when I say it is my purchase, they clear it and it goes through. It can be a real pain. However just last week, they did the same thing and it turns out someone had tried to buy $1000.00 worth of shoes on my card so they declined everything with vendors but had tentatively approved the bookstore sales. This time, I did need to get a new card, but they allowed me to use it for the book orders. I don't always get these things, It might be something that simple or some kind of computer glitch in the canon ordering system. Good luck!!! I hope you get your camera. I have nothing but good things to say about my 5d mk iv. It is a great camera!
