I was born and raised in U.P.(Iron Mountain). Ford had a large plant there, which produced the old Ford Woodies until the plant was shut down and moved to Brookpark,Ohio in `52. I still recall many auto ferry trips across the Straights before the Mackinac Bridge opened in `57. A UHH member,"Yooper2", has posted many scenic shots from around the U.P. Have'nt heard from him lately.

Heading there the first week in October. Wife's father was from Escanaba so we want to hit there but pretty much open from there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are coming up through WI from the S on I41, I'd recommend turning R onto 35 at Marinette, to drive along the W edge of Green Bay/Lake Michigan to "Ask A Banana"; that's a nice drive in the Fall. Keep hugging the shoreline and continue along 2 through Gladstone until you get to St. Ignace. Book a night or two in a Motel there, and take the Ferry over to Mackinac Island; a very pleasant walk and plenty of photographic opportunities, too. Then head round the bend on 75 to N and the Soo Locks, taking in a couple of scenic waterfalls along the way. From there, you can tour a little Canada (bring your passports!), or swing W along the S Lake Superior shoreline and a Pictured Rocks cruise.

The Return Trip can start at 41 again in Copper Harbor; if you got that far, you are officially an Honorary Yooper (unless you are already a Troll, that's not fixable, eh?).

All good comments. We actually had very little traffic and never had a problem with reservations. We live in Southern IL. Went up to Bayfield and them east along the shore. Hit every town except Marquette. We prefer small towns. Best fish in the state is at Browns in Paradise. Shipwreck museum in Whitefish is very nice. Hundreds of waterfalls and lighthouses. Some require hiking and some lighthouses are now privately owned but available to view and shoot from nearby. Plan to do some hiking, or at least take hiking sticks and good boots.

The route on the map was ourbasic plan and we did lots of side trips from that. Eat local restaurants. Be certain to have a couple "pasties" (pronounced "past-ies")

Watchout for deer EVERYWHERE. I have been busy and behind on peocessing images, but quite a few are on my website PhotoKurtz.com - look for a UP folder, lighthouses and waterfall folders. There's lots of overlap. Don't depend on tourism advertising for much. They often have errors. We confirmed everything on Google every day.

We counted our days and didn't move every day. Pick a place for at least two days and then move on. Some days we only went 15 or 20 miles. Even at that, we missed lots of stuff.

Yes to Lake superior trips. The Circle Line has lots of suggestions. Another visotors center was Northern Great Lakes Visitor center. If you have time ahead, we had plenty of stuff mailed to us. Then keep hitting visitors centers for every county, they all have local stuff to share.

Spent 7 days in the U.P. in early July. I love it up there. My in-laws were both born in Baraga, and my mother-in-law moved back to the Ishpeming area last year to help care for her 95 year old mother. A great place to visit, check out the Lakenenland Sculpture Park next time.
