Just before the 400/2.8 of 1985, already mentioned, Nikon made from 1976-1994 an f/ 3.5 IF ED. The AIS version first made in 1982 is a fast, top-rated lens that stayed in production for a long time. I saw a listing of it in a Nikon catalog from 1994 for $5,440! You may still find this spectacular lens for less than $1000 today.
Happy hunting!

Hey Hoggers, I am looking at a older Nikon 400mm 5.6. Any thoughts? Thanks, read some good reviews on the ones I could find but I know you guys know best.
I assume you are talking about manual FOCUS since (sadly) Nikon has never made an AF version ! I have used the 300 4.5 EDIF and it is very GOOD ! I have looked at the 400 5.6 EDIF - but it seems a little overpriced IMO.
Have you looked at the Sigma 400 5.6 APO macro ?? I believe some of these ( later ones) had motors in the lens. The Sigma is a quite good lens - I have used one in Sony/Minolta mount.

I am looking at the Nikkor catalog "50 Years of F-mount" from a few years ago (2009?) and on p. 30 under Telephoto there is an AF-S 400 mm f/2.8G ED-VR.

Yes, I know - but it is NOT f5.6 ........is it ? - that the OP is referring to
The OP is referring to the 400 mm F5.6 EDIF manual focus lens

I am sorry, you are looking for an affordable AF. I hope Nikon will listen to you!
What are you talking about emotional?? Lack of understanding? All I want is info on the lens not for you to analyze about something you don't know. Have you used the lens or not???

I have one and love it. Very light and portable, 72mm filters. And sharp and contrasty! Here is a full size jpg from the eclipse. Check out the guy's face at 100%. This is shot wide open using a 42MP Sony A7RII from raw with no sharpening. Also an eclipse pic using the 400 + Nikon TC-301 doubler.

Not only his face, but check out the small print on his t-shirt. That will let you know how sharp the lens is. Just as long as your eyes are that sharp!!
