If I post an image here, and request comments, I would expect 32% of the comments to say my pictures absolutely suck, Maybe half of those would tell me why the pictures suck and half of that group will offer suggestions to improve. Far too many comments complement the photographer even if the images are marginal or worse. Post a photo of an eagle and the accolades are automatic. If we are seeking that type of response to our photos, Facebook may provide a better forum. If we are serious about improving our photography, then - within this group - we are looking for the negative comments. We will never improve our photography based on positive comments.

Some attributes of photos depend on where they will be used.
I can see photo #1 above being very comfortable as a photographic illustration in a magazine article about coffee, but I am not sure I would hang it in my kitchen;
Photos 2,3, and 5 would look nice hanging in a kitchen or a coffee nook.

The texture of #1 would not interfere with the image and may actually enhance the image in the proper setting. I agree that the yellow and red on the cart is distracting and would probably crop the image just below the bottom of the pan.
Photo #2, I think I would drop the brightness of the bottle labels, I would feel more comfortable if they were approximately the brightness of the preprinted labels. - I like the vignette of this photo.
Photo #3 I would not change, and #5 I might remove what looks like a light artifact on the red striped coffee bag.
Photos #4 and#6 may be nice photos, but I felt no 2X4 in the forehead on either of these photos.

Over all, I think you did a very good job.

Great images, especially the first one.

There will always be a division between purists who dislike post-processing and people like me who seek to make an image more interesting, regardless of its "reality".

You followed your muse, not the finger-wagging of the flat image reality crowd. Well played.

Markie, thank you very much! I knew this one would bring out the hounds... it's amazing how much alike these guys are; all talk and no show! And when you see their photos, few if any, you can see why they never post! It cracks me up!

Comments were invited. I didn't see berchman's comment about an unappealing filter as 'finger wagging' it was an opinion, as valid as anyone else's and quite helpful. As it happens I agree the filter makes the guy's skin look very unappealing and, if you look at much of my work, I'm definitely not a flat image reality type of person!

Brian, your not the type of critic I'm talking about.... you share your photos and good ones they are! I knew this photo would draw out the idiots who love to complain and would be better served critiquing their own photos!
They always offer up the negative and never the positive! I'm an armature point and shoot type of guy who loves playing with the software! I push as far as I can but never seek perfection!

I just realized that I need to post "comments welcome" on my pic entries. I appreciate all the constructive criticism - how else will I grow and learn? I think there is a fine line between "criticism" and "sniping" and I didn't see that here personally. I tend to look at all my pics as "fails" in some way lol but I also know that there might be some tender egos and you have to kind of look at who is posting and whether or not it is appropriate to comment - at least that is how I look at it. I don't feel knowledgeable enough to critique anyone here but hope enough people feel confident enough to critique me - I appreciate it!

A group of photos that are tied to our addiction for Coffee.
#1, Action shot, and the phenomenon know as the "Snap Shot Squiggle Effect," known world wide as "SSE," oddly adds to the capture feeling of the movement. I suggest that you crop to the apex of that godawful yellow/red triangle, it has nothing to add to the misty cool tones of the total photo. That which does not add detracts.
#2 could be titled "Name Yur Poison" Again, the brown tones really grab us... interesting documentation, very good composition.
#3 The strong upper shelf should stand alone. Suggest you get rid of the competitive lower shelf and its smaller bottles
#4 Some purists might criticize the triangle of sun burn out, personally I think it adds to photo as does the subtle SSE.

You make me recall how good South American Coffee is and what overcooked burned leave-the-husks-on** junk we drink in USA is. And the coffee shops who think that never cleaning the tar from their pots adds to the Star quality and Bucks the norm of good tasting coffee.

Thank you for sharing this great grouping....obviously I must like them else why would I take so much time with my comments vs saying "nice set" which is the UHH norm.

**the light colored flakes in your coffee is husks left on at the grind.. should be ground off

Berchman, I knew someone would call this one out! And you are the typical type of person who does this! Never shows a photo on UHH, except for one time, and is quick to scorn at ever chance!
I could care less what you and those like you think! Get a life!

A totally uncalled for comment. Were you only asking for compliments?

Love these! Playing around with some effects myself and having fun. Love the subject matter too - been in that business far longer than holding a camera - need to try some pics like that myself. (would kill to find out where they got those glass jars!)

Deer2ker, thanks for taking a look! I fully agree having fun with effects is what it's all about! Always nice to see a new visitor!

Absolutely D - If anyone wants a truly wonderful coffee experience, make sure that you visit a local roaster and try the coffee- the coffee sitting in most coffee shops is "old" more than 3 weeks old (therefore the oily black residue you see in containers) Optimum coffee? 1 day to a week old - perfect!

I've been on UHH for years and can handle and invite constructive criticism! It's the Snipers and Purists I can't stand!

Sorry you feel that way! But snipers and purists I detest with a passion! I've had a ton of constructive criticism that I welcome! His was not and the fact he only posted one photo should say it all!
