The eclipse over Gainesville Fl wasn't much to look at and it was covered by clouds anyway. I just took a picture of it on the TV screen!!

So we didn't have the opportunity to photograph the eclipse itself, but did get a couple of our eclipse experience. What have we done? Post them online so far, here and on Facebook. The response has been mostly positive so far. We had house guests from LA, including their 10 1/2 year old daughter. We tried to see the eclipse from the beach, but the weather didn't help us much.

Our friends decided to take off and drive back to LA, so got out from under the cloud cover and did get to see the eclipse.

Even under the heavy cloud the light was atypical for the time of day, and the experience was still interesting. We'll probably print them, maybe even hang them on the wall as an example of "The Summer of Gloom in San Francisco" since it is also the 50th anniversary of the "Summer of Love" !

Not a lot of room for creativity and little seen posted yet. Yet, there was a lot of traveling done and a lot of images captured. I'm sure the hospitality people in the totality region are not at all depressed by the opportunity to raise prices for a day or two. Fortunately, there have been no accidents or deaths reported stating the eclipse as the cause. That alone may be a USA first! Anyway, a good experience even if not your weren't in totality.

Sadly, a guy from the Bay Area flew up to Oregon in a small aircraft, crashed and died: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/small-plane-crashes-near-prime-eclipse-town/
and another crash, no injuries on the return: http://www.livescience.com/60205-plane-crash-eclipse-return.html

Was the eclipse the cause? Not directly, but the trips probably wouldn't have happened if the eclipse wasn't the motivating factor.

I will use my pictures to remind myself that if I ever have the opportunity to see another one, I will keep my eyes glued to the sky WITHOUT a camera in front of me, In central OR almost dead-on the center line, the 2-minutes of totality seemed more like 15 seconds.

My eclipse adventure was a nine day round road trip from Bergen, Alberta, Canada to Salem, Oregon with a buddy. I've collected all the pix and video into a Flickr album (Eclipse Adventure Photo Blog) for anyone interested (https://www.flickr.com/photos/58664881@N02/sets/72157684166431812/).

I've created a time-lapse movie of the full eclipse event: https://www.flickr.com/photos/58664881@N02/36736046096/.

And I've created mosaics and HDR's from several groupings of images, such as the one below:

Some of the pix will also be published in a local newspaper under my From My Office Window byline.

The total solar eclipse was a once in a lifetime event for me. I will look back at these pix and videos for many years and remember this amazing trip, the people I met and the eclipse experience... I might even consider another Eclipse Adventure for April 2024!?

Enjoy!

Excellent post and a great question. I didn't even bring my camera out during the eclipse. Barbara and had lawn chairs in out backyard where we sat and enjoyed the show. I have seen numerous photos that were taken and many are excellent. I don't imagine that mine would have been any different from most that I have seen.

Although I only got 93.5%, I plan to print this image, mount it on poster board, and give it to my grandchildren for Christmas. What they do with the prints is up to them.

Did not even consider trying. Just 80% locally.

NASA has some fantastic pics, much better than anyone who is earth bound can get.

For those who didn't get to see or shoot the eclipse, all is not lost. Blake Rudis, f64 Academy, can show you how to create your own.

I live where it was a 99.47% partial eclipse so I sat on my patio and filmed it. My DH was my camera assistant and kept moving the camera mounted in the tripod for me while I clicked with my new remote and enjoyed the show. I made a collage I learned about from videos by Matt Koslowsky (spelling?) and Terry White. My collage came out very nice so I had it enlarged and am having it matted and framed to hang in my home. I wish I had been at totality but with all the hoopla in this area about it, I decided to stay at home and film it here. It was interesting. It did get darker (but not as dark as I thought it would) and the temps cooled down several degrees. The birds, nearby chickens and roosters got very noisy, then very quiet and then "woke up" and got noisy again. Our dog went inside when it got darker and came back outside when it got lighter again.

Okay Hogs. I went to Eddyville, KY to view totality. It was the right idea as Mineral Mounds state park had clear skies and only had about 150 people viewing. A nice manageable ad hoc community. You bet I took photos, 650 of them. I put the lens on manual and pulled focus for four separate shots for each keeper I wanted at that specific time interval. I tried autofocus but it kept seeking. So what will I do with them? Well I suspect about 75 percent of them will be trashed as out of focus. The keepers will remain on my computer until I get the gumption to make a mosaic or print out a particularly good one. The drive back was the nightmare traffic jam. Getting there took 2.75 hours, coming back 8.5 hours... But here let me coin a phrase, "Totality worth it."

I took the photos for my own enjoyment like most others. Since then co-workers and family have expressed interest. In one photo there was a solar expulsion--probably the wrong terminology--that arched up and was pulled back into the sun by its intense gravity (see attached photo). That was very unexpected but it gets to the heart of why I take photos...to see what is captured, hold onto a memory of a split second in time, and sometimes capture the unexpected. Yes, it's nice that other people enjoy my photos, but that is not the goal. I take photos to fulfill my own inner desires and to regularly challenge myself to new experiences. On April 8, 2024 I plan to be somewhere in the path of totality with more capable equipment and do my best to capture better resolution photos.
