This may help. I would set aperture wide open as most of the big lenses are designed to be sharp there. Select ISO as lighting dictates.

AK, where can I find these books, I have looked several times on amazon and Barnes & Nobel and have not been able to find them either by title or author. Thanks.

Go to backcountrygallery.com and scroll all the way down to get to the links to both books. These are ebooks. Steve Perry is a member of UHH. His books and articles as well as his youtube videos are very well done. Sometimes you have to listen a few times because he has a tendency to speak rather fast.

Best advise is: Get both books by Steve Perry . . . "Wildlife Photography" and "Secrets of the Nikon Auto Focus" . . . Both books are outstanding !!! He also has great articles, information and reviews on his website . . .

I second that. They are really good ebooks. Here is the link: backcountrygallery.com

I shoot manual for all BIF. A lot depends on the birds themselves and distance. Ducks have a faster wing-beat than raptors and so on. Do you want to freeze the shot or give a bit of blur to the wingtips to simulate motion? Lots of work. To be effective one needs to know the camera and the birds.

What setting do you recommend

Sutter speed setting

Hello I shoot a Nikon D7200, 1/3 crop mode to get me really close photos. ISO 1600 max. I use a Sigma 150/600 sport lens which equates to approximately 1200mm. I start at 1250/sec F8 and adjust from there. Single point focus, continuous, and back button focus, and camera set to only shoot on focus. Frames set to high continuous with 100 maximum. Practice on panning( following the bird) and keeping your focus point dead on your target ( not easy). The old saying spray and pray may hold true for a while till you have to process hundreds of worthless shots. Patience and Practice will win the day ! Take Your Time and Shoot when subject is best !
Best of luck, and you'll have tons of fun !!

A note: I shoot sports. Mostly marathons but some football (both American and the other football), basketball and T&F. Compared to BIF, what I shoot is relatively motionless. A bit of back and forth as well as to and away movement. Almost no real up and down. BIF involves all of that movement, covering more distance in all directions and MUCH faster speeds. More than settings it needs LOTS of practice.
