Be sure and tell that to Nikon if you have an issue with a different brand battery while under warranty.

That's to get them out of the warrenty.....if you don't use a specific brand memory card, they will tell you the same thing. That's so they don't have to pay. But just like any battery, any card will of the right kind will work.

Some batteries are chipped. The chip is nothing more than a voltage regulator. It senses current and voltage and stops the battery for working if either is out of spec. Or starts to get hot. Thats so it does not blow up or catch fire.

I dug a little deeper on the net. Seems there might be a more insidious side possible. Look where it mentions Panny :) Might be lore but things like this do not surprise me.

Also I know certain features in the menu have at times been affected depending on the battery/camera mfg ie- battery level

I guess I don't understand why someone is looking to save money on a battery when they buy the most expensive APS-C.

Because they can. People do dumb stuff all the time. Why ask why?

Shoot, I've used Wasabi batteries for years. Why jump on someone with the same answer as 10 other people. If you are brand conscious, good for you. I know that B&H includes a second battery with the D500, so at least that one should work. I'd look it up on their website.

If you choose to spend your money one way or another, it's fine with me. I've shot digital for YEARS, and have used 3rd party batteries in all that time, and never had an issue. Well, I did have an issue with one battery failing prematurely. (it was a Nikon brand for the D-200 that came with the camera body, failed after about 4 months.)
Shoot, I've used Wasabi batteries for years. Why... (show quote)

...I've had great success with Wasabi, also...actually perform a bit better than Nikon brand. That said, my D500 would only take their brand so I traded-out on the recall (a year and change ago) and got 4 *new* EN-EL 15's...my Wasabi's work fine in my D800, they're made for it!

You're right Jim, your point isn't arguable :)

Have used third party batteries (wasabi) for my D7000, but these will not work with my new D500. Are there any third party (read cheaper) EN-EL15 batteries that will work in the D500?

What you can afford the the D500 but you want to cheap out on the batteries? I hope that works out for you.

No doubt you were able to perform some controlled process to quantify this analysis! LOL!

The manufacturer of my sports car recommends that I use the high octane gas, but I think it runs just as good on low octane. Maybe even better. Saving a lot of money...

Here's a short list and I'm sure hoggers can add to it.

I have no knowledge if there are 3rd party batteries that will work in the Nikon D500 or not, but it would require the 3rd party battery be chipped and have firmware code that would interface correctly with the camera. If such batteries exist they would be advertised as being "fully decoded" meaning the battery company successfully created firmware code that works. I certainly would not buy any 3rd party battery that was not claimed to have "fully decoded" firmware.

There is no such thing as a nikon battery.....read my previous.....spend your money where you want, just understand what you are buying, and make sure if it is a battery, it is the same style, and Mah or more, and made in the USA.

Your incorrect about this. Late model cameras now use batteries that contain chips with firmware code that communicates with the camera. As a result, the camera can recognize and refuse to work with any battery that does not have suitable firmware code. If the battery doesn't have suitable code it doesn't matter what Mah the battery has.

Yes, not so long ago, before camera manufacturers started chipping there batteries with counterfeit detecting code, what you said was valid but not for the D500.
