I purchased a very nice D610 on this site when I recently expanded to full frame, but immediately figured out that it was just not going to work for me. The small form factor was uncomfortable..I was never confident simply holding the camera.

Nikon camera bodies generally follow one of two basic design layouts. The D610 does not match the layout of my D300 and D300s. And since I am often in a situation where I must respond quickly, the difference in the controls from those bodies, which I will not retire yet was just too great. In particular, the arrangement of the Release Mode Dial and associated controls, which I use very frequently, was just too different for me to use reliably. The menu system was OK, but the final result was that I quickly traded it for a D810. Handling and operation of that body mirror that of my others almost exactly. (For the same reasons, I did not choose a D750.)

Any future DX updates will almost certainly be to a D500 when the time comes for all those same reasons, in order to maintain operational consistency.

So yes, there are many considerations when choosing what to buy.

Using that logic, I can make great photos with an 8 MP camera as well, so why bother getting anything better?

that is probably right, great photos were being produced when the most digital cameras were 3 and we were excited to see the great new 5 MP cameras were being released. However, the newer, bigger, better has added a lot to what is doable and possible at all skill levels.

I am interested in your comment on the new Sigma 100-400 mm lens. How does it compare with the latest Nikon 70-300 mm for sharpness, weight is my interest although I also own a Sigma 150-600 mm lens which is my upper limit using a monopod.

Oh just a further comment. The Sigma 100-400mm is (of course) a lot smaller and lighter than it's bigger brother the 150-600. I would say that it is a bit heavier and bigger than the old Nikon 70-300mm, but I bought it mainly for its smaller size and lighter weight. It's much easier to take on a walkabout and the additional 100mm over the 70-300mm does make a difference. I bought a D7200 with the idea that this lens on a DX body would be ideal (being the equivalent of 600mm at its longest), and it would be except that I find there is still too much noise even at ISO 200. See the 100% crop of a pic I took a couple days ago. This was taken at ISO 200 f/8 @ 1/1600, with the Sigma 100-400 on the D7200. See the second photo a detail of the birdhouse (3rd photo) taken with the Sigma on the D810 for comparison, 100% crop, although not apples to apples it does show the sharpness of the Sigma, the excellent bokeh, and the lack of noise and dynamic range of the D810. ISO 100 f/6.3 @ 1/60, hand-held.

Have been a money making pro for nearly 50 years with a slim necessary arsenal... Stick with what you have, shoot, learn, shoot tip the body wears out. The camera does not make the photographer... the photographer makes the photographer

Yes, you can take great photos with a 3MP camera, but what you can do with them later is another question altogether. I'll make the argument that the main advantage of the D810 is the 36MP resolution. You can make HUGE prints that you cannot make from a 3MP or 5MP or 8MP file, especially if the original is a jpeg. It really depends on the final usage of the photo. If you're just posting on Farcebook it hardly matters, just use your phone (which nowadays takes great photos at 8MP or more).

I love my last purchase , and it will serve me well for a very long time . There are more things than just mega pixels that make this camera great for landscapes. It has a base ISO of 64 lower than any Nikon manufactured, creating 14.8 ev of dynamic range , I has highlight weighted metering , electronic first curtain shutter ..It is amazing to use .I got mine @ Nikonusa $1895.00 + tax year end refurb Sale this past Christmas. I really can't see a d850 being that much better ....I am actually shooting landscapes with 3 brackets and no filters and only using 1 image to produce the final image recovering the shadows with no noise.....

sounds great Brian and from what I have seen posted on here the meta data shows great results from this camera in most all cases.

I found the dynamic range of the 810 to be much greater than the 610. Obviously the resolution is much greater. For me the ergonomics are better. That said, I have friends who shoot with the 610 and are very happy with it. I upgraded to the 810 2 years ago and have not regretted it.

I have a D610, great camera. Stay with it as there's no real benefit in upgrading. Put the cash towards another lens.

I moved from a 7100 to a 800E ..to the 810 ...so glad I did .. have had it since preorder days when it first came out ..the good glass must be used ..! That being said ... only the photographer can make great photos .. nothing wrong with a 610 .., , but an 810 is so much fun ..

The 850 will have wifi .., tilt screen with twice the clarity resolution ... poss back lit buttons ..40+ mega pix ...and an updated brain ...increased low light ... yes I will get one ..

I think we will both have a major GAS attack when the 850 is out.

I can't imagine more capability than what the the 810 provides me -- anything more in the way of features would probably be wasted.
