Another issue is copyright. Canon, I believe, has a patent on IS, image stabilization. Other companies are forced to use different acronyms to convey the same concept.

Why all the different acronyms for the same things Canon has TV AV IS, Others have SP AP OS still others have A S OC LSMFT. Why can't they all use the same letter designations.. Medicine uses more acronyms than all of industry but every Doc knows what PQRST means (cardiac wave sequence). There is no other designation. All pacemaker companies use DDD VVI PICD as designations and every one knows what they mean. SO my advice to all the camera makers is AGREE on terms. please

True there are more Canons than anything else (like Nikons which I use exclusively) and there are more Fords than BMWs / I think that the point has just been made.
As for camera control nomenclature: Tv (Time variable) is nice but everyone calls it shutter (speed) priority. I have never overheard "Smashing waterfall image, what time variable did you use?" LOL

You are right. But BMW drivers are commonly considered among the worst drivers on the road.

Nor in my town or on my street, but that is because we have an open season for BMW drivers as a public safety initiative.

Frivolous answer
Fujifilm cameras are the solution. They have no mode dial.

The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked. Once you ask it, it is no longer stupid. Just a thought ...

Why should they? Learn your camera and you should not give a crap about other camera nomenclature.

Perhaps for those who are new to photography, we can simply refer to these things as apertpriority, shutter priority, manual, program or auto, rather than using acronyms. Then no one has to ask what they mean.

We do use those terms. I believe the OP is asking why the manufacturers don't use the same markings on their cameras to denote those terms. I am probably wrong but I think the only one that is pretty much standard is P for Program. I use Nikon. I know what A-Aperature priority , S-Shutter Priority, P-Program, or M-Manual means but I have no idea what Canon's AV or TV mean or those of any other manufacturer.

As you must remember from your politics learned in, The Attic, being the most doesn't make you correct.

Does Canon still make cameras or are they just into ink and copiers now?

No. Just cleaning out the gene pool. I believe BMW drivers also receive a disproportionate share of Darwin awards.
