I am new to this forum. I investigate traffic accidents and sometimes I have to photograph small things like the filament inside a headlight or tail lamp bulb. I was told that there was an inexpensive magnifying lens that goes over your regular lens. I currently use a Cannon Rebel T3 with a Cannon Zoom lens EF-5 18-55 mm lens. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you,

Try a single element close-up filter.
I used them for years until I could afford something else. Got pretty good results and used smaller apertures. For what you do it should be just fine. If you see you want better at least you are not out much and you can still us it on small flowers etc.
Here is a doublet for a bit more money: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3szdr4681QIViDuBCh31_wd7EAYYASABEgJCgPD_BwE&is=REG&m=Y&sku=94232

Here is a single element set: https://www1.crutchfield.com/p_762A405CUS/Hoya-HMC-Close-up-Filter-Set-II-1-2-4-40-5mm.html?tp=13259&awkw=281590875060&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=177737755149&awdv=c&awug=9006810

Try them they should do just fine.

I have a set of three magnifying front end accessory lenses, a 2x, 4x, and 10x. They work very well and are inexpensive.
I would try this first before spending a lot of money. I bet they'll do what you need. >Alan

Good advice indeed.

Use a Raynox lens. This clamps over your lens, and is very sharp, unlike most attachable lenses, b/c it has corrective elements. Professionals use it for close-up photography. Comes in different magnifying powers, and they can be combined. You will need to know the diameter of your lens filter to know the size of the clamp to get with it. Sold on Amazon, but probably from other places too.

Please consider the Canon 500D close up dual element lens. I have one and it works VERY well. It will screw onto the front of your current lens. It comes in 52mm, 72mm and 77mm sizes. Just go to the websites below. I also use Xume adapters in conjunction with the Canon 500D and various other filters to make life easier. Bottom line, both products work & work very well.

Jimmy has a great suggestion. 500d will give what you want. I suggest you buy the larger diameter so it will fit on each of your lens.

Macro lenses and add on magnifying lenses have a very shallow depth of field. Usually anything more than the thickness of a coin in front of or behind the focal point is out of focus. Does not sound like a good application for what you want. A macro lens would be more suited to a pic of a stamp or a bug than recording accident details. You would be better off using flash with your camera lens at a high f stop (eg f9 or above to get an adequate DOF) and cropping the pic. Google "DOF calculator" and you can see how deep (or narrow) the depth of field is for different camera, lenses and f-stop (aperture) combinations.

A 2x front end lens should give him adequate magnification without overly collapsing the depth of field.
For less than 10 bucks it's worth it for him to do a test.
