Starting in 1965, the metered finders interfered in some way with the camera's name plate, and each successive one, T, Tn and Ftn required further modification. The cameras delivered with each successive metered finder were modified by the factory. I seem to recall that the modifications can be made after the fact, but they would amount to a file job and probably decrease the value of the cameras. I doubt if Nikon would do this any longer. You'll find this information buried in this article.

Thank you. I’m always in need of more education and appreciate the link. My F, serial number 7018706, has the tapered nameplate.

Great information to have, thank you. I have a Photomic FTN on my Nikon F

I have the same. Took it out with me shooting today, as a matter of fact. The best thing I ever did to it is get the "P" screen (45° split), really makes focusing a snap.
Anybody know where I can get one for my F3HP?

I loved seeing these pictures of the old Nikon cameras. I still have my Nikomat FT-N (Japanese for Nikkormat; smuggled in by an airline pilot for me in 1968). It was my only camera up to 2000. I think it is the most beautiful camera I have ever seen or owned. The Nikon F was similar in looks, but the succession of view-finders and flash adaptors made it look more and more kludgie as new models came out. The 50mm f/1.4 lens is great. I also have the 35mm lens shown in the group picture.

In the late '60's I was flying throughout SE Asia and picked up a Nikon F, a Nikkormat and a few Nikkor lenses, (35mm, 50mm,105mm, and a 200 mm) in Japan during a layover there. Those cameras served me well for the next 30 years. With the advent of the digital age I sold the Nikon F with lenses and kept the Nikkormat with the 50mm 1.4. I've still got it and everything works like new. I should get rid of this last survivor but I hang on to it to remind me of many fun times it has accompanied me on my travels.

I like the design of the shutter control ring on the base on the lens mount of the Nikkormat. It is very easy to change the shutter speed by pushing the lever with one finger.
I have never thought to get rid of both of my Nikon FTn and the Nikorrmat FTn and never will. I will pass them on to my grands

List one good reason to go back to film.

I'll give you two.

1. Its fun!

2. I haven't yet but I'm planning to dust off my Nikon F's to get back to macro work after a number of years. I have some great pre-AI macro gear and a Df body is financially out of the question. I'm also using a Mamiya C220 for macro. Its just capable of 1:1 with the 55mm lens at full bellows extension.

My father had one of these. I started with a Nikon FTn. I bought a Nikkormat FT3 at some point, same camera but AI lens capable, with some additional cosmetic touches and a built in flash shoe, which the early cameras lacked. My daughter has it. I don't think she is actually using it anymore. Maybe I should ask for it back, though I'm not sure at this point how much I want to jump back into film. I think about it.

Fine pictures of a mint condition Nikkormat! Mine is a bit more beat up, and my son used it for a few years so it had a kind of second life. Now I have it back. I have a D5100 now, and occasionally use the old Nikkor lenses on it. Cheers!

Love the old Nikons. I have an FM2n and a Nikkomat FTN EP that I dearly love.
