But that's wasted space which makes the camera larger...

For more on how that has failed in the past, see Pentax K-01.

Nikon needs a new mirrorless mount, a line-up of mirrorless lenses, and a fully functional adapter that is included with the camera.

But if Nikon made a full frame body similar to the A9 and included an adapter similar to an auto extension tube that allowed the seamless use of F mount lenses as well as a new line of lenses designed for the shorter flange distance, I'd borrow to buy it!

I think that's what they will do. The will make a new camera with short flange distance and new mount but also making adapter so that you can use F mount lens. Just like Sony E mount cameras can use A mount lenses with an adapter. But making a new mirror less with a native F mount I don't think so because doing so they can't compete with others in term of compactness, speed of focusing and frame rate also make the system less precise due to mechanical coupling. A purely electronic interface for Nikon F mount only work with the new E lenses which aren't that many yet.

Not clear why the K-01 was not a success. From my perspective, the Pentax K-01 and Canon EOS-M had the same shortcoming - no EVF.

Note: I purchased a K-30, but I would have purchased a K-01 instead if viewfinder had not been an issue.

I am guessing this would be directed at the same market the Canon M5 is, the part of the "enthusiast" market currently occupied by cameras such as the Panasonic GX8 and the Sony A6300.

I'm kind of thinking the same, but I've been wrong so much I hate to hazard a guess. I do believe, though, that if it is to be widely embraced by professionals and advanced amateurs, it will have to offer quite a bit more than the current crop of mirrorless cameras. It will be interesting to see who comes up with what next!

You are correct BUT, this is just announced as of today, is that old, it may be, if it is, I have fallen into my own trap once again.

They will engineer the flange distance (final lens element to the sensor) to match, which is easy because there's no mirror box.

I can see that now, just when you are about the photograph a skidish deer in the wild you receive a camera call.

being a Sony a-mount man and having so many Minolta Maxxum lenses, the e-mount was a total turn off.

Do not worry, if Nikon is planing to beat Sony you will be able to use all your current Nikon glass on your mirrorless Nikon camera. If they do not allow that then they are doomed to fail in the mirrorless world.

I do not think that Nikon is planing to close the bakery anytime soon so I am sure they will either include a simple adapter to allow current Nikon users to use the old glass with the mirrorless cameras or sell it for $99 or less. But they will probably present a new mount or a modified F mount on their upcoming mirrorless cameras.
Do not worry, if Nikon is planing to beat Sony you... (show quote)

I suspect that the geometry will mean that an adapter will not be at all simple. Nikon will have to run both a mirrorless and a DSLR system, and gradually phase out the latter - They have now missed the boat, and it is not catch 22 - it is sh1t or bust.

Why worry about it until they announce it. Just useless rumors.
