had a tour of the Traverse City mental hospital, closed down in 1989...it was a huge layout, almost totally self sufficient, raising their own livestock, fruit, vegetables,...doing everything they could on site....and giving the patients jobs, to give them a purpose in life. They found they had some very talented people there, who might have just a slight glitch in their makeup! Some of the buildings have been restored, and house offices, shops, and condos, and some still under restoration! Very interesting!

Looks like it served its purpose in its time- (Now that many of the mentally ill live out on the streets, unable to effectively take care of themselves, maybe it's time to revisit that model) I like that it was self sufficient and provided meaningful jobs for the residents.

Anyway- well done images, interesting and intriguing.

Great photos. Even on the best of days and times that place looks pretty dismal if you had to stay or work there.

I would have thought you would send images of the White House.

Very nice, Bob. Some very unusual pictures of a most unusual place. I can't imagine owning a condo there and telling people my new address. "Are you a permanent resident there?"

Great shots, Bob. You did an awesome job of capturing the creepiness of the place, especially that tunnel. It's nice to see that it's being repurposed.

Very nice, Bob. Makes one think, though. 1989 was not all that long ago and the place looks so archaic.

I know...also a lot of vandalism has taken place, and much was stripped out....the building did start in the 1800's though!!...thank you so much for commenting..appreciated!!

Interesting story. Good tunnel shot.

The nurses would use the tunnel to go from one end of the building to the other, especially in the Michigan winters, and not have to go through the locked halls!...thank you!!
