Stunning Digital Photography by Tony Northrup.

Although Stunning Digital Photography is an excellent book and a must have in any good Digital photographers library, it is not model specific. It will teach you a lot about digital photography but really nothing about how to use the Canon EOS 70D.

Peterson's Understanding Exposure is the place to start.

It's probably my favorite photography book, but the OP wants a book specific to his camera model.

I bought a Canon 70d about a year ago. Their included manual wasn't very helpful. I'm looking for a book that will help me understand the effects of various settings, and how to capture specific scenes (sunsets, landscapes, close-ups, children, portraits, etc). Perhaps one specifically for the capabilities of the 70d, or something like a Xxx for Dummies, or??? Do any of you recommend a series, or author, or source?
Thanks!

I would heartily recommend David Busch's book.

I stay away from the "Dummies" books. I've purchased several over the years and found them not very helpful. David Busch has a book for the 70d. He does a decent job of exactly what you want. David Busch's Canon EOS 70D Guide to Digital SLR Photography.

For general knowledge of how photography and DSLRs work... Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" is a very good place to start.

For the 70D in particular, there are a number of guide books to choose among. I am familiar with David Busch's guides for other models and imagine his is quite good. Doug Klosterman's, too. There are some others I'm not familiar with.... check out the reader reviews of those on Amazon.

I found the Dummies series book I bought for Canon 7D Mark II to be excessively basic and unhelpful... little better than the use manual. I'm not a fan of the Dummies series. (Besides, I don't consider myself a "dummy" when it comes to photography.) But it was the only book for that model at the time.

I second the David Busch book recommendation - I have it and find it very detailed and useful. Only negative is you can obviously tell that some content was taken from previous books because the camera designation was not changed. The information is accurate, just appears the proofreading was not done ...

Look up any subject on your browser, such as exposure or focus, read thoroughly, then move on to the next.
Learning is a process, not an automatic quick explanation.

I completely agree. Here's a post I made a while ago about the Canon 7D Mark II for Dummies book:

By the way, I think David Busch's book on the 70D:
https://www.amazon.com/David-Buschs-Digital-Photography-Guides/dp/1285765265/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499880907&sr=8-1&keywords=david+busch+canon+70d
was one of his last with Course Technology Press - he now writes for Rocky Nook.

A must for every photographer. But as far as you request is concerned Go to amazon and click on--Canon 70d books. The first 2-Busch understanding the 70d and 70d for dummies fits the bill.

Get understanding exposure by Peterson. Look at CreativeLive.com for fast start video for your camera. They are very good.

Carson, one of the best decisions I made when I purchased the 70d, was to purchase a series from Creative Live, by John Greengo on this camera. He is a marvelous teacher and in this set he goes through everything about the 70d. Helped me set up the camera, etc. And I have the download and can refer to it if needed. You have received some good suggestions so far. I know you will enjoy the 70d.

Canon 70d Fast Start. Has 18 or so sections that you can watch camera in hand, to learn and apply. I would watch any course John Greengo offered.

I purchased Peterson's Understanding Exposure and Busch's EOS 70D Guide.
