I bought a Canon 70d about a year ago. Their included manual wasn't very helpful. I'm looking for a book that will help me understand the effects of various settings, and how to capture specific scenes (sunsets, landscapes, close-ups, children, portraits, etc). Perhaps one specifically for the capabilities of the 70d, or something like a Xxx for Dummies, or??? Do any of you recommend a series, or author, or source?
Thanks!

A must for every photographer. But as far as you request is concerned Go to amazon and click on--Canon 70d books. The first 2-Busch understanding the 70d and 70d for dummies fits the bill.

I have Canon 70D Experience and Canon EOS 70D, From Snapshots to Great Shots, kindle edition loaded on my PC and tablet.
The factory manual is not intended to teach
how to use the camera, just what each feature of the camera does. It's up to you to learn how to actually use the camera.

Have you tried U-Tube videos, you should be able to find some that will help you work with your camera.

Get something about basic photography ( like "Understanding Exposure" from Brian Peterson), once you're through with that, your included manual will be very helpful indeed!!

David Busch's Canon EOS 70D Guide to Digital SLR Photography is an EXCELLENT book specifically for the 70D. I had the 60D version of it when I had my 60D. Now I have the 70D. It's just that good.

Agreed, One of best starter books. Words with photos so you read AND see. You will understand the Triangle thoroughly and shoot manual, or shutter/Aperture priority quickly.

I bought a entry level DSLR Cannon, Rebel 5 & I went to Barns & Noble & in the photography section found an excellent book written for my exact model camera. This author has also written books for Nikon's. You could call the store & ask them if the carry the book for your camera & save yourself a trip. You might get lucky. Also I have seen very good books at Sam's Club for the Canon & Nikon's & you save money at Sam's since they discount books. I go to my Rebel book a lot since there is so much to learn about digital cameras.

When I started buying DSLRs, I bought a book in the Digital Field Guide series for each. I found them very easy to understand and more than helpful with the camera's individual settings. I presume the ones for Canon are the same (I use Nikon). Good luck.

I just found another GOOD book today that I can recommend - "Digital Photography - Complete Course"

It is a DK (British) book with GOOD illustrations - $30 at Barnes & Noble.
