Yes lots of rumors hints about a mirrorless from Nikon (and Canon) and another rumor is the Nikon MILF (mirrorless interchangeable lens format) camera will utilize the Nikon F mount and thus be compatible with existing lenses.

I've been shooting Nikon and Canon (And others) for almost 60 years. Bought one of the early rangefinder Canons, but then move to a rangefinder Nikon. Also an early Asahi Pentax in 1959.
I certainly hope the best for Nikon. They gave me a VIP tour of their labs and a production facility in the 1980s. Very gracious. Even gave me pentaprism off the line. Made a fine paperweight. LOL. I passed it along to a budding young professional.
I hope they will learn from Fuji and Sony, but bring the Nikon pizzazz to this. Neither Nikon nor Canon really understood the need for a high quality, professional level MILC. Perhaps they do now.

I think they figured that out. I wouldn't worry too much about Nikon, the company is almost 100 years old. That is a very significant achievement. The worry might me phrased as "I hope they will continue to comit to being a leader in the high end photography market".

So many established companies made bad decisions, to their eternal regret. Lotus, Kodak, A&P, Blackberry, Blockbuster, Yahoo. No company has a guaranteed right to exist - unless it gets relief from the government, with taxpayer dollars.
