True story, I promise you!
When I lived in the Midwest, deer everywhere was, and still is, an everyday occurrence. One day, though, I had stopped to take a pic of a doe with two fauns. They're so accustomed to people that getting a good shot usually isn't an issue, but this day a tourist saw me and stopped. She wanted a pic of the doe eating out of her hand. What she didn't tell me was that she was going to try to feed it a medium rare hamburger! The doe and offspring, quite naturally, headed for the hills as soon as she caught a whiff of that semi bloody meat.
I told the woman that deer are vegetarian, and she looked at me as though I was missing something and said:
Wait for it
"Well, there was tomato and lettuce on the hamburger!"
I am rarely speechless, but that one did it.

Wow! How lucky you were to do this! I live in PA and have never gotten this close to a deer!
