Hi
I am in Boothbay with some photography friends. Any suggestions where to go within an hours drive?
Thanks
OOPS!!
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens about 1o minutes from town.
Great photo ops.
I am with the OP. We've been to the gardens already. Doing Ocean Point area this morning. A local suggested Rockport or Belfast but just looking for a photographers take on that. Looking for interesting piers, wharfs, scenic spots.
Take any number of boat trips with Capt. Fish past islands with lighthouse, views of rocky coast, etc.
Pemaquid Point lighthouse, next peninsula north
Camden, the town and harbor. Also, see the view from the top of Mt. Battie in state park just north of town.
I'd suggest the next peninsula up --- Pemaquid Point. In particular, the lighthouse, New Harbor and Back Cove for interesting wharfs (with lobster traps, boats, etc.). I just left there yesterday (after a week photographing the area).

No drive at all. Get out in a boat and cruise around the harbor for lots of material. This lists some boats that cruise locally or go to Monhegan island, a short trip across the bay. Great location and fun boat ride. ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE NECESSARY EXPERIENCE, you can rent your own boat. There are rocks just under the surface all around the area, so don't go out without a NOAA navigation chart, which shows water depths and rocks and ledges. Get one at a local marine supply store.
http://monheganwelcome.com/get-here/Camden, less than an hour's drive is a haven for tourists and offers great photo opportunities.
You can drive to the top of Mount Battie for an overview of the town and harbor.
http://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-recreation-areas/camden-hills-state-park/Rockport is a small harbor town. Not crowded with tourists. Narrow harbor with many classic
wooden boats at anchor and old unused lime kilns. Also the home of the Maine Media Workshops,
one of the finest art photo schools in the country. They have a gallery.

When we were in the area, I enjoyed photography at three different locations:
(1) along Harbor boardwalk
(2) at Railway Village
https://railwayvillage.org/(3) during whale watching cruise {whales is the one thing we didn't see}
1. Drive the back roads that wind around the numerous coves and inlets. 2.The Maine Botanical Gardens. 3.Best of all: take the ferry to Monhegan Island!!
