That's my walk around lens on my D5300.
Its light and preforms well.

Are you sure you don't have the AF-S?

The AF's autofocus doesn't work on a D5300.

Since you say "light" I wonder if maybe it isn't even the new AF-P lens?

I like my Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 AF-S IF ED VR (red) lens and would really like to by the same lens in a constant 2.8 aperture model. But, to the best of my knowledge there is no such version available from Nikon. Does anyone know of a 70-300mm constant aperture lens by any manufacturer with a Nikon F mount?

"Constant aperture" isn't properly descriptive. The aperature of all but pinhole lenses is variable. If you like word "constant" then "constant minimum aperture" would be properly descriptive.

A lot of folk on UHH have been confused by that terminology.

I was basically going to say the same thing. You already have the lens, others opinions don't much matter at this point.

I do have that lens. It was one of my first Nikon lenses, probably the second one I bought. It's an ok lens but I rarely use it anymore. I prefer the 28-300; I find it far more versatile. The one lens to have when you are carrying only one.

I also bought this same lens but found it to be a bit soft .I chose to carry the older 70 to 210 f4 constant aperture along with the nikon ED IF AF Nikkor 300 mm F4 prime .Very sharp Glass this lens can be had from $400. To $ 500 .on ebay .The only short coming is the large helicals make it a little slower than an af-s.Niether one has VR . To Me sharper is better than VR. I sold the 70- 300 VR 4 months later @ less than cost.

Thanks MtnMan, I appreciate you informing me of the correct descriptive term.

During baseball season often I take about 1000 pictures per week with my Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 AF-S IF ED VR (red) lens, and am well-satisfied with it for daytime photos. For games after sundown, to stop action, I endure the extra weight of my 70-200 VRII f/2.8

Are we all discussing the same lens? The OP listed the lens as Nikon AF 70-300mm f 4-5.6 G, which closely but not exactly describes Nikon's 2003 release of the Nikon 70-300mm F4-5.6 ED AF lens listed on Nikon USA wesite as available for $175.00.

There is also the 2006 released 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF ED VR lens at approximately $500.00 and then there are two recently released (2016) Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 ED lenses, one with VR and one without VR. Buyers of either of these last two lenses should be aware that they are not always compativble with all of the Nikon camera bodies.

Strictly based on the OP's original lens description and comment that he purchased at a cheap price makes one wonder if he is talking about the 2003 released lens, the 70-300 f4-5.6 ED AF non VR lens?

Since he further said the VR letters were gold ...

See what happens when you skip ahead.

Except he didn't. He said the correct term is "constant minimum aperture" He should have said constant maximum aperture.

Sorry I even asked now, didn't mean to start an argument, sold the lens to my nephew I will just stick to the lenses I have, will never ask another question on this website, really feel bad for all the trouble I caused by asking a question

Please don't apologize or run and hide. This discussion epitomizes what's best about UHH: a lot of ideas and data were exchanged respectfully and openly. If you'd withheld your query, we'd all have lost. Happy shooting.

Follow the post, the OP states it is a VR and later states the VR is in gold on the lens, so I doubt it is the cheap non VR lens.

OK, so you have the older version of Vibration Reduction. I wouldn't worry about it—I personally would not sell your lens just to get the later version of VR. That might be why you got such a good price. I think what you need to do is mount that lens, and go shoot with it. Let us know what you think. Best of luck!

I was wondering the same thing, was there any significance to the color of the “VR” lettering on the lens, as on all other Nikon lenses the all of the lettering is in gold. I bought this lens about a month ago. On mine, the letters are in red, however, the seller (Cameta) assured me that it is the current (newest) version.

Just purchased a Nikon AF70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens would like your opinion on this lens

As others have stated, I would have preferred the 80-200mm f2.8D, but for less than the price of a used one of those, I got a NEW 70-300. Before I bought mine, however, I borrowed the same lens from a friend who lives nearby and took some shots with at a local air show. I was quite pleased with the results. Is it the sharpest tool in the shed? No, but I’m not going to be printing at 16x20, either. The VR makes things easier, but it’s not that heavy of a lens so handholding isn’t going to be that hard to do.

I posted a couple of whale photos from a recent Alaska cruise on the “Photo Gallery” page. These were taken with this lens (on a D7100).

No. Every 70-300 I’ve seen is a variable aperture lens. To make it a constant minimum aperture f2.8 would triple (at least) the cost of the lens.
