Need help to decide Canon 6D M2 or 5D M3?

I need some advice on deciding to upgrade my Canon 7D. I am debating if I should get 6DM2 or 5DM3. This is going to be my first full frame camera. I am an amateur photographer and I take pictures in raw format and post processes in Light room. I seldom take videos with my camera. 6DM2 just came out recently with full frame and more features with larger pixels than 5DM3 which is quite old now. However, I saw a lot of outstanding reviews on 5DM3. I like 5DM4 but it is too costly for me. Is it worth to buy 6DM3 over 6DM2?

I have invested a lot of EF lenses for my existing Canon 7D. My goal is to get a full frame canon camera that last another 5 - 10 years. I take mostly landscape, portraiture, macro and social events pictures.

Thank you for your help and advice.

I have the 6D and would love the 6D m2 but I can’t spend that on a hobby. For your use I can’t see why the 6Dm2 wouldn’t do what you want. The 5D is a heck of a camera but even more money. I vote for the 6Dm2.

For the shooting you describe I would recommend the upcoming 6D MK 2 for sure. It's pixels are smaller than the 5D3, but there are more of them. It also has a faster processor now, but comes up short in weather sealing, number of memory cards, number of focus points, and some more minor areas. It's also $500 more than the 6D2 new. Your choice though, not mine.

Having had a 6D and now a 5DIV I would go with the 6DII without hesitation. The only reason I have a 5DIV is because somewhere in my sub-conscience is a little guy telling me I need a new toy every now and then. Compared even to the 5DIV the 6DII looks very capable for anyone who doesn't beat up their equipment and who shoots the subjects you listed. The 5DIII is an excellent camera but the 6DII is a much newer platform and I do believe it's features will fulfill your needs better then the 5DIII.

The new 6DII will be $2,000. A used 5DIII can be had for around $1,700, more or less. Both are great cameras, one offering the very latest Canon technology and more resolution and the 5DIII perhaps a sturdier build. I had the 6D and it was a great camera for me and has a sturdy build. If you don't abuse your equipment, like a car, it will keep on ticking. Have fun shooting.

I am in the same boat as upgrading from my 70D, but my choice later this year will be the 6DMK2, and for the reason of size. It is smaller than the 5D MK3 and has all the same qualities. I am also an amateur, but I do post travel video's.

I got a 6d Mark 1 in preference to a 5D3 and was very happy with that choice. Hasn't got as many bells and whistles, and the autofocus points are all fairly central, but for low light, consensus was that 6D1 beat 5D3. So I assume a 6D2 would easily do so? I shoot stills of music, stills of events (prize givings etc, sometimes in badly lit rooms) and property. I never shoot video on the 6D, so it works for me

The DPAF makes the 6D MII a no brainer.

For my two cents worth, make sure to get the Digic 7 (latest) processor. The accuracy and speed of autofocus are spectacular. It's hard to fix an out of focus shot after the fact no matter what other attributes the camera has. I was the volunteer photographer for my high school 50th reunion a month ago, and likely would have bought the new 6D if it had been available. It wasn't, and I bought the 77D. The results were spectacular.

While I don't doubt that 6DMK2 is "better" than the original 6D, I don't think I would spend the extra 650 or more for it. Just not enough improvement to justify the money. Unless you already have FF glass that you are using for the 7D, you will need to spend $ there. The savings over the just out of the gate 6DMK2 will give you a nice start.

Or the 6D II with a price drop after the 6D III is announced.

I have only 1 thing to say to you.............. 5d Mark iii. I made the transition from 7d & 7d Mark II to 5d mark III and haven't looked back. I grew into this camera and it is my primary camera with the 7d Mark II as secondary and back-up. Just do it and join the legions of us who have made this transistion.

Buy the one you like better regardless of price.
