I use canon in my business (photo booth) and LV. You can not use LV in manual mold.I use a 21" monitor attached or when i am tethered to my computer. I look in the camera just the monitor and take the picture. A lot of good videos on youtube on this. Just practice, practice, and practice.
Almost without exception the many manuals I've consulted praise the virtues of Live View (LV). Would like to ask our fine and many resident experts to comment on your experiences and possible practical approaches in dealing with any difficulties encountered in using LV--if, indeed, such was the case. Please comment--when and how you use LV? I personally experience difficulties with the slowness of AF. What steps seem to give the best results? Or do you avoid using LV entirely? The only possible success I have with LV is perhaps in landscapes but even there I'm mot very happy.

I have a T3i and use live view anytime I am using manual focus. I always use a Hoodeye eye piece(sells for around $50 under several brand names) for video or stills. I think the eye piece is a must in doors and out.
I use Live View for cityscapes after dark, and moon shots. I usually zoom in and manual focus. It works good to get sunset and sunrise shots too. I would never use it exclusively. 95% of the time I use the viewfinder. You must use it for movies too. I'm thinking of getting a loop that attaches to the back for movies.

I don't use my Live View on my 7D very ofter, however it does come in handy when my focus is critical. I am finding now that I am getting older, focus is getting harder to see.

I rarely use live view on my 7D and if I do I can never remember what I hoped to accomplish by using it. One more thing the manufacturer could take off my camera and I wouldn't miss it at all. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
Many thanks to all who responded to my post on LV. I always was intrigued by the various capabilities offered by LV but rarely tried any of them. Either the occasion did not call for it or I just forgot about it. I mostly use standard AV. Your comments certainly piqued my interest and I'm ready to do some experimenting. I found billybob40's use of LV via tethered camera to a computer most interesting. But at the same time found his comment somewhat puzzling in regards that manual focus is not workable with LV. I thought just the opposite (as well as many others.) Or am I missing something here? Over all the comments were all interesting, worthy of to be explored further and I thank you all for sharing them with me/us.
I have the 7D i mostlyuse LG for video or when setting up camera for time lapse to make sure I have what I want in view. Other then that I never use it.
I have the 7D as well I don't use it. I have no need for it. When I have to focus close I use the +/- bottons on my camera.
