Upcoming Trip

I will be taking a 3 week trip out west ( Colorado, Utah, New,Mexico) this fall that I'm very excited about. One question I have is how/where to store photos while on the trip plus how best to back them up. I'll be camping quite a bit so a laptop won't work. Any advice? I have a,Nikon d7100 which has dual cards.

Second question: what accessory must haves do you recommend?

Store them on a memory card for your camera!. Some may hold as many as 2000+ photos! They are cheap.....bring a couple back-up!

Here's the system I've come to rely on in my travels. (I use iPhone, iPad that connect to i Cloud but it can eaily be done with Droids and Google Photos)
1) buy some additional cloud space (Google is free)
2) get a SD card reader that fits into your iPhone/iPad. Costs about $20. At the Apple store or on line.
3) i use one 32 or 64 gig SD card per day
4) i upload the contents of the card to my phone or iPad at the end of the day and it uploads all the images to iCloud. Which permis me to access them with either my iPhone or ipad.
5) I store the used SD card in my hotel room safe and then take all used SD cards home with me where I format them for my next trip.
6) Before formatting the SD cards I copy them onto the 4tb external hard drive connected to my MacBook Pro which is connected to a 27" monitor, where I do my serious PP.

I can't say it's a perfect system, but it gives me the following benefits:
1. Reliable back up while traveling
2. Don't have to take my laptop or other HDs with me anymore.
3. Can view, sort, delete, edit and share my images on my iPhone or iPad if I choose --there are some great free editing apps for iPhone)
4. I travel with my Nikon D500 or Lumix G85 but the iPhone 7+ is also a great backup camera.

As I say, the system is not perfect, but I haven't lost a single image yet and I can leave the laptop or external HD at home.

Safe travels!

Purchase extra SD cards, simple solution for storing until you return. As far as accessories, that will depend on your equipment, lenses, etc. If you have a 300 prime, than a monopod. Otherwise, I would bring a wide angle lens for sure. I took most of my photos out west with my 70-200 and 14-24. Have fun, as the views are breathtaking!

When packing light, I use a Kingston MobileLite, http://www.kingston.com/en/wireless/wireless_readers/mlwg3 and USB flash drives. Take plenty of SD cards and keep these originals in a safe place. At the end of each day's shooting, put the SD card in the MobileLite and copy the photos to a flash drive. You need a smart phone to control the MobileLite.
Some MobileLite models have up to 64GB of memory, which can also be used for backups. Keep the used SD cards and flash drives in separate places. The MobileLite is small and cheap.
Some users use the RAVPower File hub, which is similar to the MobileLite.
Another option is the WD "My Passport Wireless Pro", which has its own internal battery-operated hard drive. It's larger and heavier than the MobileLite. Can be programmed to automatically back up your SD card photos to the hard drive. To backup, plug SD card into the Passport Wireless. Turn on. Wait for lights to stop flashing. Done.
None of these will let you view/edit your photos.

A small, wireless hard drive would be good. If I'm going by car, or maybe even plane, I would take a small laptop or netbook and store images on that, as well as on a separate hard drive. When I got home from Yellowstone, I had images on the SD cards, computer, and hard drive.

Handy, but relatively expensive.

Are you uploading via wi/fi or via cell phone data connection? You must have a very fast connection if you are able to upload many RAW files AND you must be paying Apple a lot extra for the iCloud storage. If you're uploading without wi/fi you must have unlimited data on your cell phone plan. I'm interested because I, too, use my iPhone 7+ as a backup camera to my Fuji X-T2.

I do my uploading at the end of the day. The hotel usually has pretty fast WIFI. I let it run all night while my iPad or iPhone are charging. By morning, it's usually done uploading the previous day's images. JPG is a lot faster. I have upped my iCloud to 1tb and Apple then upped it to 2tb for the price of 1tb. I think its $9.99 per month, but I think it's worth it for the storage capacity, the accessibility from all my devices and ease of use. Tech support if needed from Apple Care for all issues is excellent.

The OP said that he will be *camping" a lot, so your solution of using fast wi/fi won't be available to him.

If you set your camera to make and store backup jpegs on the second card a 32GB card will hold more than you need.

I am presuming that you will be driving. If so, then get an inverter and then you can power up your laptop and an external HD without difficulty. You'll also be able to charge batteries while driving.

Thanks everyone! Lots of good ideas that I can use. I will be driving a lot so an inverter with laptop works plus I'll take a hard drive for storage and extra cards will be used as well. I'll pore over the other suggestions as well.
