I could blind fold you and take you to any of five or six different areas in the city and upon removing the blindfold you would swear you were in a different country. After my divorce I wound up in an affordable Hollywood Apt. In mature businesses profits become paramount as the subsequent cash is distributed to shareholders as an incentive to invest. Mature businesses usually have a stable stock value with minimal growth. Amazon at 23 years old is still be run like a start up. Profits for operating capital come from its web and cloud services and commissions from independent sellers so the company. It stock value continues to climb to new heights every quarter and its investors are satiated with increase net worth instead of higher dividends.

In the grocery industry profits are very small on a per item basis and volume is the key to keeping the lights on. Remove the profit requirement from grocery in just one company in the market place like what Amazon is expected to do with Whole Foods and the others in the marketplace will find themselves struggling.

Here in Florida, the average price paid for groceries is higher than a lot of other areas of the country because one company, Publix, has maintained an near monopoly on with a huge share of the market. I have virtually stopped shopping at Publix and now buy fresh produce from Aldi, Costco and Whole Foods. I get meat and seafood from Costco and an independent grocer. I still buy cat food at Publix as they are literally on the corner by our condo. I look forward to increased competition for my grocery spend.
