There was some kind of update years back to the D1x. A whole lot of people complained about the cover material lifting after getting the cameras back. A few of my friends went to Nikon in Melville. They would take the camera into the back for a few minutes and returned it fixed. When one of the members of our club mentioned that a lot of our members had the same issue they handed him a brand new bottle of LePages rubber cement. The Nikon rep said that anyone could still bring the camera in, but this might save them some time. It worked.
I don't know if they are still using the same material.

I asked Nikon, and they suggested rubber cement. Incidentally, the cover on the memory card door on my D810 came loose, and I could not get it to re adhere. Gaffer Tape was a great substitution.
Thank you rgrenader. It'll be interesting to see what Nikon suggest, when I take the D700 to them. It is my first experience of rubbers lifting on a Nikon body.

Thank you rgrenaderphoto, I'll be interested in Nikon's remedy when I take my D700 in tomorrow.
Never had a problem with any of my Canons going back 40 years. :-}
I'll agree with Gene - my D700 had the same problem- I admit to carrying it constantly, in deep Louisiana's high heat and humidity, with lots of perspiration and generous dollops of insect repellent. I think the insect repellent, swirled with buckets of sweat, running down arms, wrists and fingers, the most destructive part of the mix. I ordered a replacement sent of coverings and, after a good cleanup, the new pieces were perfect, everything fit great and the camera still looks pretty darn good.

Thank you fuminous, that was some test for the rubbers ! Very heartening to hear the result was 100 per cent.

The side left and right rubber protectors on my Nikon D700 are lifting, particularly the left hand rubber, adjacent to the c/s/m button.
Any advice on the best way forward would be appreciated please.
Grip kits - rubber kits are sold on eBay for most all models of brand name cameras. I've used a number of them. Not expensive and come with pre-cut double side adhesive taps. Biggest job... getting the old cement off by rolling it up and off with your thumb. Otherwise easy.
