So, catch them in rehearsal. Also try some video, it will help you see where the characteristic 'personality moments' occur and also make them comfortable with you being there and taking pictures. You may never use the video, it may not be any good, but it will help you identify when the 'money shots' are likely to occur. Here's a short crappy video segment I took of Ruthie Foster (no external mic, just the in camera mic) before I wandered closer to the stage to take stills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgLeyPzUhnU

With Ruthie, the mouth opens, the teeth shine, the head goes back and that wonderful soulful sound comes out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkYh2BYONms

An external mic will do a better job for video of course in case you get some good moments!

Wow! Love the video's. She's amazing. Great idea to see how they interact together. Thank you for your advice.

Do a group shot with no instruments. Do a group shot with instruments as if on stage. Get some pictures of them actually playing.

Oh, and get a picture of them crossing the street.

Humm, good point.
My Hysband and I own a large building that they practice in. It has great places to take some shots. Like an old brick wall. We're in the process of turning part of it into a loft. Here is a few examples of what I was thinking.

I suggest high key with dark clothing. Clean and appealing. You can do wonders in post if need be. Be sure to share your results with the group.

Oh, good idea. I will. The shoot is next Tuesday. I'll post pictures on the Photo page after I edit them.

Shoot them while they're tuning warming up and doing sound and light checks. They won't be in sync, but you'll get authentic motion.

BTW, how does the rest of the band feel? Will they cooperate letting you get near?

Yes, they will let me do anything I want. Two are friends of mine, I'm married to one. I don't know the other one, but they will cooperate. I like your idea. I will get some shots of them practicing. Thanks.

Something tells me you are going to have a lot of fun with this. You are part of the band after all!

Being an insider will get you the best results.

The lead singer in my Husband's band asked for me to do a photo shoot of them. I'm excited and nervous. I was thinking of having them hold they're instruments for one pose. The singer can hold the mic, but do you think it is enough for the drummer to just hold his sticks? Any other suggestions are appreciated. Three are average height and thin. One is short and heavier. Any ideas of posing them? In case any grumpies read this: Yes, I have looked on line. I also have a few example pictures. I just wanted to, for my research, reach out to this group also.

Consider not having the instruments at all. Some of the most iconic musician photos of all time has no instruments (Joplin, Morrison, Beatles Abbey Road cover, etc.).

Spend some time with the band and get to know them as people (since you are married to one, I am sure you are well on your way already) and think of what a photo should convey about the different personalities.

Finally, spend some time going over some famous musician photography for ideas and inspiration.

Good luck and have fun.

Hi Tracy,

I have done quite a few Band promotions and live shoots...

What works for me is posing the band promotional images and candid on the stage for live shots.

Two go to lenses for me are the Canon 50mm f/1.2L and the 135mm f/2.0. I generally set the camera to auto ISO in manual mode and chose the f stop depending on the number of people in the shot. even f/2 will get enough depth on a single person with the 135. Generally you want some motion so 1/100 to 1/250 sec will work fine.

Front lighting is great and many times that can be arranged ahead of time... If not a hand held flash set low in manual mode will work well for fill if needed or shoot wide open aperture and deal with the noise in post.

Here are two with low light with an ISO of 12500...the last is a posed shot outdoor shot at f/8 and the Sigma 15mm f2.8 fish eye.

Best of luck

There is so much potentially possible. Does the band have a 'brand' - visually or stylistically that you need to represent or communicate? Can you describe their stage persona in some way, collectively and as individuals?
