I have read a LOT about the latest cameras on the market, but wanted to solicited honest opinions about the few that I have narrowed it down to without limiting the discussion to those three.

The main two for me appear to be a Nikon Coolpix B700 or a Canon PowerShot SX540. The SX60 looks great for certain aspects but I am mostly interested in a camera for wildlife photography and these two I mentioned seem to be best fits.

Anyone with real world hands on for both would be extremely beneficial!

Buy a used Sony DSC- HX9V point and shoot camera... you can pick these up from between 90 to 130 dollars...try KEH.com. Or buy a Sony A6000 with kit lens (new or used)...or the Sony NEX6 used...Both the A6000 and NEX6 are very small and have APS-C sensors.. For lightweight travel, I use the A6000 and the DSC HX9V which has a very powerful zoom lens.

The best at your price point is called a cell phone. Or a Sony RX100 II. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R10.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xsony+rx.TRS0&_nkw=sony+rx100+ii&_sacat=0

When you use the common phrase "Point & Shoot" that is a demeaning epithet; a camera that only low life use. You can buy a P&S for less than $50; you just point and shoot, no adjustments. OK, call what you are talking about a super zoom or a bridge.

I have a Sony A-65 and all the lenses and more that one would care to have. My old Minolta lenses fit and many gifted to me for a good home. A Canon SX50 "Bridge" excellent for Birds & Car Rallies. My in the pocket is a Sony HX50 that I call a "24/7." I have a belt pack or just put it in my pants pocket. The 40# [exaggeration] Sony S65 back pack is out of the question except for special "hay look at me I'm a photographer" occasions. The bridge, like the Panasonic FZ150 suggested, is too bulky to have with me 24/7. So that narrows down to Super-Zoom Compact cameras; many reviews to help you chose.

Why a 24/7.... well you do not schedule appointments with "of the moment" photo opportunities... they just happen, be ready with the camera on auto, then if time permits change the setting..

Great articles: reading up. I thought I had already found what's available online, but neither of these came up during my (rather specific) search.

Thanks!

Love this camera. Very sharp. Took me about three days to get comfortable with it.

Now that - l like! Added to the short list. The G9X from the first article above is on the list, also.

Great feedback, everyone!

Thanks, again.

I like the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS. This camera has a large zoom and large mega pixels and a robust processor.

I have used the Canon SX series for a long time, now an SX2690, because it is easy to carry everywhere I go. I take a lot of bird and animal pictures and I am looking at the new SX 730 HS. The feature I like is that is remote controllable. Now I would be able to set it on a tripod or other structure and view, zoom, snap etc from a free app on my tablet or phone.

The SX730 was also under consideration until I decided to pare it down to one per maker, and the SX540 came out ahead for Canon. I had already looked at the SX60, but that appears to be a 2 1/2 year old model, and I am trying to at least keep current if not somewhat "future proof" - which of course is more-or-less impossible with manufacturers updating every camera annually.

Honestly I believe this is as close as you are going to come to your requirements. If 4k video is a deal breaker you may have adjust your budget right now. Good luck in your search!

I have the SX60 and I absolutely love it. I had an SX40 for years before I upgraded to the SX60. (I also have a Nikon D5200 and a compact Canon PowerShot SD1100IS--digital ELPH.

All have served me very well.

To be honest, it's not a deal-breaker, but for the $450-ish I would spend the Coolpix B700 has what I need and then some. I suppose in retrospect I should have added "with long range zoom" to my initial specifications.

Thanks to all who responded, it's always great to hear what the real users have on their minds when you go to make a decision like this.

I am still thinking, but I am nearly certain that in spite of the great candidates shown by everyone here, it's going to be the Nikon B700. I can add a 3rd-party battery & charger and a high end (Sandisk Extreme Pro 95x) 64GB SDHX and be done with it.

Main Considerations:
How compact is it? Will it fit in your pocket or will you need a camera bag (protruding lens).
MP, megapixel count, 12-16MP is the usual range. 12MP = less noisy, 16 MP = a very small increase in detail which may be obscured by more noise.
Is the zoom range long enough for your considerations. 24-80 = short zoom, 24-140 = med. zoom, 24-720+ = long zoom.
Will it shoot raw?
Price.
Secondary considerations:
Familiarity with the camera manufacturers menu system (Nikon, Canon, etc.)
Goodies such as Tilt Screen, etc.

I love my Nikon P900 or if you want to spend a little less try the Nikon P600. Both have incredible zoom (the P600, a little less)

Buy an Olympus OM-D E-M10ii for less than $500 (you can even get some kits that come with 2 lenses) and leave it set on auto if you want a cheap, expandable point and shoot. Better price, better pictures, better growth.
