Make sure that your camera has the latest firmware installed. This will often cure incompatible issues.

As far as 8GB cards being max for D200.
I use a SanDisk Extreme PLUS 32GB 90 MB/s "SD" card in my D200. Thats right sd card using Digigear SD/WIFI-SD TO CF adapter. So the camera can use larger than 8gb cards even with an sd adapter.

SanDisk and Lexar are recommended. The largest size is 8GB according to the manual.

Technology changes as time goes by. In the days of the D200, there were no cards made to store 64Gb, so the design of the camera did not accommodate them.

I believe, that I can use a 16GB card in my D200. Have to make a point of testing it to be sure. But all my cards are 8 and 16 GB, and I think I use them all in the D200. I know for sure they all work in the D300. But at the time the manual was printed 8GB cards were the monster on the block and were priced about the same as a small house.

I put a new Lexar 64GB CF memory card in my D200, formatted it, and it registers as "FULL" in the control panel. The shutter release button will not actuate and it also flashes an "r00" message in the counter on the control panel. The camera still works with my older Sandisk 16GB cards but not the new larger cards. Is it possible that the new cards are just not compatable with the camera? The cards work fine in my D810 but not int he older D200. Any ideas or suggestions about what is going on? Thanks

Likely it's a capacity limit in the camera. I don't remember any changes in the interface of CF cards over the years that would cause this. Following is some detail on SD cards that doesn't apply to your problem so you might not want to plow through it, but I already wrote it when I noticed you're talking about CF cards so I didn't feel like deleting it .

All SD cards are not the same. "SD" only cards are 2GB maximum, and you don't see them around much anymore because they would probably be 15 years (or more) old. SDHC cards range from 2GB to 32GB and are still very common (the larger capacity cards anyway). All of your 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB cards will plainly say SDHC on the label.

All 64GB (or larger) SD cards are SDXC cards. Look on the card, it says so on the label. SDXC cards range in capacity from 64GB to 1TB, but the larger capacity cards are so expensive I don't follow the market closely. Perhaps the SDXC standard can go higher, the largest available right now is a SanDisk at 1TB, and if the standard allows for larger cards I don't really care because $$$.

Usually, devices designed for SD cards will not be able to use SDHC or SDXC cards at all. Usually, devices designed for SDHC cards will be able to also use SD cards, but not SDXC cards. Devices that use SDXC cards will usually also work with SDHC and SD cards. My experience is that SDHC devices that say they will work with, for example, an 8GB card (because that's all that was available when the device was released) will work with any SDHC card including 32GB.

Your camera is about 10 years old. I paid dearly for 4gb SD cards in 2009. If you got an 8gb SD card, you virtually had to take out a loan from the bank. Your Nikon D200 most likely was not designed to take a modern version 64gb compact flash card. If you want 64 gb, then I suggest you get 2 each 32 gb compact flash cards. And that may be too much. Memory cards have come a long ways since 2006. Many are much faster than yesterday's group. And they are also less expensive. Except for XQD and current C-fast memory cards.
