Things to try:
Remove lens and clean the contacts.
Remove battery for a few minutes.
Reset camera to factory defaults. (in Setup menu)

Thanks. I have cleaned the contacts. Resetting, I have not. Apparently, this is nothing new for this lens. I see complaints on Google.

Take the battery out and start over. Read owners manual.

FWIW, the 16-50 is a better lens IMHO.
