These kind of "tricks" are not acceptable to ethical food photographers, and if used in advertisements can be considered false advertising.
Interesting article. I have zero experience in food photography. I would think the old " air brush" would do the trick rather than using motor oil and cardboard.

Interesting article. One of my daughters has a food blog and would never consider it. She takes great food photos, but uses a Canon 60D, shoots in RAW and then uses LR.
Online WD-40 is mentioned several times as an option of adding sheen.
