You do not need to buy memory from apple. The 16g will probably be 2 8g sticks. If I remember correctly, the iMac can actually take 4 sticks. Go to crucial memory and look up for the model iMac you are getting and then max out. My iMac has 48g, and one of these days I'm going to put the ssd I bought a year ago in it.

But as I stated earlier, you will void your warranty, if there still is one. If not, go for it.

I don't know if adding 3rd party memory would void the warranty, but it would easy enough to remove in the event of an issue. On the other hand, opening the case to swap the HD for an SSD is a different matter...

I spent a good bit of time, including phone calls to Apple, and an independent certified Apple seller/repair, and everyone said the ssame thing--it will void the warranty.

So, its $200 bucks per 8 Gb, which is quite high. Crucial is $125 plus change for 16 Gb. I was going to order my iMac with 8 GB, then install Crucial myself. Didn't want to void the warranty, though, and even if I pulled it out, they have ways of knowing. I watched them pull apart my MBP after it got wet, and they showed me how they can tell various things that happened.

I just went ahead and ordered with 32Gb. If I need more after the warranty expires, I'll do it myself.

I hear you. Not sure how they would tell about removed memory, but perhaps it stores a periodic configuration file. Without sounding partisan, that is one thing I like about PCs - it's an open system, and they don't care what you add (within reason).

How long is your warranty on that PC?

I REALLY didn't mean to turn this into a PC vs Mac discussion, but to answer your question, I build my own, at half the price of an equivalent Mac, and the warranty is whatever applies to the individual components, but in the 30 years I've been assembling my own machines, I have never had to use a warranty claim.

I built mine, too. I just didn't feel like dealing with it again--plus I really like that 5K monitor, especially the new one.

Absolutely understand, and I think Macs are great machines. Different strokes for different folks - all good.

Cheers

I don't believe the OP (papaj) specified he was getting the 27" iMac. It's worth noting the 21.5" iMac does NOT have easy access to the RAM for upgrade while the 27" does have an access panel on the back for the user to upgrade the RAM. Upgrading the RAM on the 27" should not void the warranty as Apple has made it easy to get to, upgrading the RAM in the 21.5" requires you to perform major surgery to the iMac thus definitely voiding the warranty.

I agree with all the others that an SSD is the fastest thing you could get for your new iMac but I have used hybrid drives like the Fusion drive and they are a good improvement over a purely mechanical drive. Get the SSD if you want the fastest performance possible.

If you are moving from an old MBP to a new IMac with the Retina display get the 27 inch display. But do get help at the Apple Store in setting up. I would suggest you make an appointment at the store to purchase your IMac and take your MBP with you. They will help with setup and will move your files to the new IMac. I didn't and had issues with the text size. It will normally be very sharp and much smaller than you are used to. They can and will help. If you can afford it, SSD is great. I have the 3T hybrid HD which is working well for me. My IMac has the upgraded processor, 16 MB memory and maxed out graphics option. It is great to use.

Good luck with your purchase.

Another vote for an 5k IMac.

You may say it "should not void the warranty", and I would agree, but according to Apple it most certainly does.

I have taken my iMacs and older MacBooks in with non apple memory and had no issues with warranty (older MacBooks could have memory replaced) this is with apple care in all the machines. Yes. Swapping the hd for an sad will void the warranty. Other than a hdd failure in the previous iMac and in a mbpro I've been fortunate and never had to use my apple care.

Memory is king for photo processing, and for the other types of work I do, 16g is(imo) barely enough for a primary system (I do have an 8g mbpro that I use when traveling)
