That's a beautiful image! So glad it's not over-pp-ed. The light is wonderful. The expression on the mother's face captures my attention.

When I shoot animals, I think it's important that the best light is on my subject and that I've got a catchlight. Enough said.

Is that a critique of this picture or a description of your priority? Does this mean that you don't like backlit or sidelit animal shots?

I do like backlight and sidelit animals, but some light has to be reflected on to the face of the animal. Sometimes snow or light coloured surfaces will do that for you. Sometimes the backlit animal glances to the side and a glint of light shines in the eye. I wait for that moment. I have been practicing on the kitten that adopted me last June for a whole year now. I have bezillions of shots where her eyes are dark. Delete bin. That kitty has no life .. no soul. When I catch that glint in her eye ... that's the shot. I'll never be able to afford a Safari trip so the kitten ..now a cat is all I've got as far as cats go. Here is a photo of my kitty in strong side light. You had soft sidelight .. from what it looks like? That's even better. Just have to wait for the moment. You don't pose cats .. big or small. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-444394-1.html

I'll post another soon so you can have a chance to critique me back.

Sandra, don't waste your money going on a photo safari. You will spend a lot of time waiting for a catch light in the eye while everyone else is shooting away. Frankly, I don't believe that you can actually compare a posed cat facing the sun in your back yard with a lion in the wild. And whatever happened to "Impact, technical, composition" ? If every picture of a wild animal without a catchlight deserved to be in the bin a lot of professional wildlife photographers would be out of work.

This is a wonderful, possibly a once in a lifetime, shot. I enjoy the lighting very much as it captures the authenticity of the wild environment. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. As you may know, lions are very affectionate with each other. You often see two cubs lying close together with one touching the other. Cubs often cuddle with their mothers or sleep between their legs.

Thanks, Revet. I am fortunate that my pension plus my part time job and certain frugalities leave me enough money to travel and take pictures.

Thanks Edie, for your kind comments. On this morning there were three adult females and about six cubs moving toward us along a dirt track. The cubs were frollicking along the track and the females were on the flanks keeping watch. Lion cubs are often the victims of hyenas, jackals or wild dogs. So a group of youngsters will always have at least one female watcher staying alert.

This is a great remembrance shot from your vacation, that few get to take. If you had captured it a few moments before as their heads passed through that patch of sunlight this would have been magnificent, especially if she had swung her head around in your direction.

Thanks for looking Judy. Unfortunately the light was low in the sky and extremely bright. Animals shot in full sunlight that morning are washed out and not worth trying to fix. Take a look at the leg in full sun. Adjusting the light to account for that high contrast makes for a rather unsatisfactory image. I prefer the contrast level in the shade, with just a few highlights. Soft warm light is my preference but I don't force it on others.
