Hello everybody,
I 'm looking to buy a used teleconverter for my nikon D600. I'm planning to use it with my 70-300MM VR f/4.5-5.6 G IF ED....
I know this lens is not the best one to use with the teleconverter, as it should be better to use lighter lenses with 2.8 or 1.4 focal lenght, but I want to try it...
I would like an advise on the following options that I have because I don't know if they fit with my lens or not (I don't know what to look at in a teleconverter, which stat...)
The options I have are these:
- Nikon TC-14E II ($292.99)
- Nikon TC-20 E II ($162.99)
- Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 Teleconverter DGX Nikon AF Mount ($83)
- Nikon TC-16A AF ($73)
May anyone of you help me with this?
I really appreciate it!
Thank you very much

Without looking at a compatibility chart, I don't believe your lense is compatible with a Nikon TC. Check it out before you buy.

Nick, this hog is not a fan of telecoverters. IMHO it is trade off of taking a good lens and downgrading its performance (sharpness) for additional reach. i would go with a farther reach lens if you need it.
Go ahead try the "Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 Teleconverter DGX Nikon AF Mount ($83)". Not a big investment. Kenko claims it is compatible with your lens and I believe the D600 will still autofocus at f/8. So it should work. If you don't like the results, then you can always sell it.

I thought they were compatible because on the Nikon website, the newer version all are named with TC and they are compatible for FX
they specificcally say "Design consistent with the current TC-14E II and TC-20E II"......
Does anyone know about it???
I know prime lenses are better but 400MM or longer focal lenght are not on my budget right now..... and because I'm going to have a vacation in Canada where I can spot some wildlife, I'd like to have as much focal lenght as possible....

I don't believe the 70-300 is compatible with any of Nikon's teleconverters. Check Nikons compatibility list on their website.
I've used the Kenko Pro 300 with a TAMRON 70-300 with very acceptable results. I then tried it on a Nikon 80 -400 and that combination was terrible. The image quality was not very good. You just never know until you try each combination.
Rent a lens..cheaper than gambling with off brand tele-converter.
A friend recommended the Kenko 1.4x pro 300 teleconverter to me. Both he and I have had excellent results useing it with our Nikon 70-300 VR 4.5-5.6. Both auto focus and exposure modes work on my d5300 and d7200, he uses his on his d7000 with similar results. Keep in mind you will lose 1 fstop with a 1.4 teleconverter. This is my favorite combination for birding and taking pictures at a Zoo. It gives you an effective 630mm with a DX sensor, in a pretty small package. I also use the Kenko extension tube set for macro photography, they work equally well.
Of the TCs you mention, only the Kenko is compatible with that lens and camera. It's a decent TC, too. Brand new it costs about $140, if memory serves.
However, why not just get one of the cheaper DX cameras? Many of the recent ones have the same 24MP resolution as your full frame D600. Pick up a used D3000 or D5000 series and using the lens on it will give better results than any teleconverter and will have the same effect as a 1.5X, except without any light loss or image quality being compromised by added optics. You can find a used DX camera for not very much more than the cost of the more expensive Nikon TCs. For example, I see a used D5200 body only at B&H for $320... or a D3200 with 18-55mm lens for $340. Both those models are 24MP. The D5200 has a similar AF system and specs as your D600.... D3200 has slower frame rate, simpler AF.

The Kenko should work OK for you - but you might also try shooting at 250mm, stopping down to f8, and use good stabilization techniques and CROP and use pixel enlargement if needed WITHOUT using a TC ! - OR use a crop frame body !
