When you have made your choice, if possible rent and take it for a "test drive". Then you will know if this IS the camera for me.

Good suggestions but most of you are not concentrating on the lighter aspect.

I take photos for camera club competition. I have a Nikon 7100 with a nikon 18 to 300mm lens. I am interested in buying a lighter camera. A Panasonic Lumix DMC Fz300 or the FZ1000. What you recommend I do?

When you're in a camera store, you may also want to consider either the Sony RX10ii or Sony RX10iii. The former has a more limited zoom range and costs less. The latter has a much longer zoom, is heavier, and costs more. Both make superb images.

These are OK but you should also be looking at the Sony RX10 III - more money I know ! but worth it IMO.

This technique is clearly useful to those who are naturally inclined to analytic methods. Every part of SS319's techniques requires a classification and measurement merhod. There are people who are more subjective at core and others whose analytics have become rusty. When it comes to money decisions the SS319 approach has definite advantages. Being able to do it is, of coarse, another matter.

Start out by drawing up a chart and listing in rows the criteria that are important to you in a camera. Now assign a numerical priority to each of the criteria. Next, go look at a bunch of camera - narrow it down to a list of about five. While in store, judge how well each camera meets your handling and use criteria and assign a numerical value to your assessment. When you get back home and back on the internet, look at all the [professional] reviews of each camera and assign values to how well the camera performs in each of your criteria.

Now, the fun:

Multiply the priority you assigned to each criteria by the assigned value you assigned to each camera for that criteria. Add up the total scores for each camera. No, do not redo the criteria nor the assigned values - just go by the highest scoring camera - you will never be displeased!

Buy camera 3!

My Canon SK-50HD is a whole lot lighter than my Nikon D800e no matter what lens I put on the Nikon. It's closer with the 50mm,f./1.4 Nikkor but not by much.

Buy a Sony a6300 or a6500. That is exactly the path I choose two years ago. My a6300 will do everything my Nikon D7200 would do and do it better.

The Lumix is good for what it is, but the 12.1 mpxl, 1/2.3 sensor is no better than your cell phone or average P&S. There is a tradeoff. If you want the extreme zoom, so far it comes with the tiny sensor. If you take photos for competition, you want to be able to print them or display them on a large screen. The Lumix is not good for that--your Nikon was and either Sony or Fuji make lightweight MILCs that are good for printing up to about 20x30.

Then should look at Nikon P900 and refurbished Canon SX50 also. Regularly we hear from people who liked older SX50 better than newer SX60 - Canon may have subtle issues with SX60 lens.

But getting back to the subject - I'm not sure any of these Canon or Nikon cameras could be described as being "lighter".

The P900 is almost as heavy and big as the Canon DSLR, except for the fixed lens.

Can't see that camera as a move for a lighter camera. Apparently popular as it appears hard to find.

"It seems that everyone is getting weaker by the complaints about weight."

I'm 86, shoot with a Canon 5dc, my walk around is a 28-135. I also use a 70-200 F4 and a nifty fifty as well. If that combo ever gets to be too heavy, I think that I'm probably being told that it's time to give up photography and sit in my easy chair until I die! :-)

Being curious I looked up the cameras you mentioned. With exception to whatever lens you choose, I ran across so interesting things.

The FZ300 is only 12 MP, weighs in at 691grams, has a 1.23" sensor, and goes for about $600 USD.
The FZ1000 is a respectable 20MP, weighs 831grams, has a 1"sensor, and goes for around $700 USD.

Considering everything, I'd forget those and go for a larger sensor, like the one found another brand like the Pentax K70.

The Pentax K70 is brand new technology, has almost 25 MP, (1.5 crop), weighs in at 688 grams, (that's 3 grams less than the FZ300 if anyone can feel the difference?), and sells for just about $650 USD, (Only $50 more than the FZ300 but $50 less than the FZ1000).

The smaller Lumix cameras have smaller lenses which should mean slightly lighter although the Pentax is traditionally built stronger which is an added bonus. Your choice.

*(Just saying!)

I like my FZ 300 because it has a 24-600 mm lens that is 2.8 all the way out. I could never carry even the 70-300 Canon all day, especially with my 5D. As an everyday camera it is perfect for me. Of course everyone has their favorites :)

If you compare the weight difference between the Nikon D7100 plus 18-300mm lens and the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ300, you're not really reducing all that much weight with the Panasonic. Perhaps getting a lighter lens for your D7100 is a better option.
