Will they eventually ban the use of cameras in the US? Many of the lakes and public water areas ban photo - taking as a precaution. They don't want anyone having photos that can be used to cripple or poison water supplies. Areas where power lines or telephone equipment is operational are also off limits. Photo-taking at airports or boat docks has also been discouraged. Pretty soon, we will be only able to do selfies against a neutral background while being monitored. A form of terrorism at its finest. The more freedoms we lose, the more terrorism wins. Terror-ism.

I apologize for my rant. I get frustrated looking back and seeing all the freedom we have lost or given away. Some due to incredible greed, some due to closed-minded stupidity, and loads more due to fear.

It's Memorial Day, here in the states. I am very grateful to all those who have served, sacrificed and given their lives "so that we who live in this already great country can be free". Thank you for your service!!!

I'm sorry, but do you not see the irony of your second last sentence (in quotes) after reading the previous paragraphs of your post?

I watched a TV special, they said having a computer in your lap would allow you to trigger a bomb in the hold. My thought was, wouldn't it be easier using a cell phone?

In reply to Oldsychc...(forgot to clicl quote reply....I used the Think Tank "StreetWalker" for my trip to Scotland, aside from my carry on camera bag I needed more space for second body and a couple lenses...the SW fit into a full size underbelly bag. Also used a TSA lock, the kind that indicates a red band if opened, it wasn't.

None, non-stop...this was a couple months ago so there was no ban with carry on's as such, I had my main shooting gear with me in an Airport International bag as a carry on. But shipping your gear ahead is a definite plus if possible, I was just short of doing just that.

Okay, when we thought it couldn't become more frustrating, it now has. This morning, Home Land Security Secretary Kelly has announced that he is planning on a ban, both into and out of the US, of all electronics larger than a cell phone. He further said that these plans have been in discussion at most US airports and airlines. (Keep in mind, the last electronic band was announced virtually over night.)

Now, before anyone thinks I'm suggesting that these bands are totally wrong, I want to go on record in believing these bands are in our best safety interest.

That said, I plan to contact our hotel in Stockholm to see if I can ship my Canon DSLR to them, in advance of our trip.

Plan B? Does anyone know of a very very small high resolution dedicated camera that we should be considering? I'm referring to one that could be nearly as small as a cell phone?

Yet another reaction post. The ban MAY be on laptop computers. MIGHT BE. Might be is not IS. The sky is not falling, the world in not flat, Y2K did not happen. Let's all settle down folks.

"TSA is TESTING new security procedures for carry-on baggage......introduced new screening protocols for carry-on bags at about a dozen U.S. airports, and they could POTENTIALLY expand to other airports nationwide.......they CONTEMPLATE expanding the electronics ban......they continue to CONTEMPLATE expanding the electronics ban....."

How about getting the facts straight? Nothing is finalized, yet elliott937 continues to post erroneous quotes.

If you plan a trip, you need to monitor this closely and be prepared. A number of years ago I was out of country on a business trip when the carry-on rules were changed in response to an attempted terrorist attack. I was able to purchase a very nice piece of luggage, but grossly overpriced, at an airport shop and separate out for luggage check what was suddenly illegal to carry into the cabin. Luckily, I had arrived at the airport early enough and found out about the rule change in time to buy the luggage before the shop ran out, which it did. I think a Pelican case and insurance may become my regular travel mode just so I'm not taken by surprise, again.

I use an LG G4 smartphone which takes superb images, I would readily use that instead of my normal camera.

Alternatively, you could get a Pelikan case sizes for your gear, pay the $50 or $100 and check it in as luggage. In that case, document the contents with a photograph and make sure you have a camera rider on your homeowners insurance or a separate policy.

That's exactly what I've done in anticipation of my October trip to the Middle East. I already had the insurance, but I bought the Pelican.

Look like it will be better to check and see if you can rent one at destination and forget about this , they are getting ridiculous or they are very concern

No cameras? Can I bring my Pentax S3?

Good question, could I bring my Spotmatic with a 35mm or 55mm lens and some film? The 1.35v battery size is obsolete, so no toxic mercury. But then they might object to my Gossen Luna-Six Meter or Minolta Spot Meter.
