Lenses for the Sony tend to be expensive, so first decide just how wide you want to go, then see what's available. That's the real choice you have to make. There is a limited number of lenses available for Sony. Using different mounts doesn't help the situation. Once you settle on a focal length, you can see what's available. You won't find any junk.

For my D750, I have a Tokina 16-28mm and a Sigma 15mm fish eye. Those are fine for me.

I echo the Tokina 16-28. It's fast (2.8) and sharp. But I don't know about the mount.

To me a general all-purpose wide angle would be around 28mm for full frame.

I would recommend the Sony Zeiss 16-35mm F4 lens. It's a great lens! Stay away from the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. I used one on my Canon 5D11 and it was great but I sold it with all of my Canon gear. Last year I purchased the new E-mount version of the same lens for my A7R but it was not sharp at the edges. I might be wrong but in my experience the Sony camera and sensor seems to dislike a lot of wider lenses. I have tried an use many other older legacy lenses 35mm and longer with great success.

Rokinon 14mm 300.00
Great lens.
Set f-8 / 11 and focus at infinity for anything 15 foot and farther. Just my 2 cents wortb

Sigma 12-24mm for full frame. 8-16mm for aps. Get the widest one you can get.

A "general all purpose wide angle" brings the 35mm f2.8 to mind. Indeed it was the 35mm lens which for many years served photographers very well before the introduction of other wide angles like the 28 and 24mm lenses which I do not consider "general purpose." I still love the 35mm lens and I use it often.
A good way to check the wide angle you need is going to a store and asking to see those three lenses I mentioned. Put them in your camera and see if the angle of view of each of them fit exactly what you need.
The selection should be easy.

It's not exactly a wide angle it's only 15mm short of a normal lens a nifty fifty , or your eye balls .

Several good options depending on your style and wallet.

Sony 28 f2.8(?, maybe its f2)
Voightlander 15 f4.5. Lots of talk about this lens. I have an old rangefinder one that seems to work ok. I think any version of this lens can produce acceptable results.
Nikon 20 f2.8
Canon FD 20 and FD 14.
Previously mentioned Rokinon 14 f2.8

Native lenses have the advantage of autofocus and exif data. Adapted lenses can be cheap and fun. Remember that with a very wide lens you'll often be focused at infinity and stopped down which means that autofocus may not be as big a priority.

I agree that your great big Sony sensor doesn't always play well with wide angle lenses.

Here is one I took with my a7 on the day I got my Voightlander 15mm. Not great, but ok for starters.

Thank you for your help.

Check out the Tamron 15-30 2.7 lens, a stellar performer.
