In your place, I'd go with the D610....the most bang for the bucks.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I've narrowed it down to the 500 or 750. Leaning toward the 750, but then I would have to buy new glass. The 500 is great, but no flash.
I'm guessing the low light is so good Nikon decided it did not need a flash.

I would disagree with you, respectfully and in a big way. The D500 is, by far, the superior camera. Not even a close race. Best of luck.

Check out dpreviews comparative test charts for the D500 v. D7200. You'll find the 7200 is sharper for its entire ISO range. Of course, the 500 has better focus tracking and a higher frame rate. But, it lacks a pop up flash for fill lighting and it lacks the "U" settings. It would seem that Nikon lessened the 7500's capabilities so that it wouldn't be stepping on the 500's toes as the 7200 does.

Best of Luck - Dan

DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS!
I admit that I'm biased because I'm a 750 owner, but it is a full-frame camera with a pop up flash (if that's a concern of yours) and I understand that you would have to buy new glass and
based on that, and your financial state, consider getting refurbished lenses (a 24-70mm and maybe a 50mm prime lens would be a good start) even if you have to start with Tamron glass
(yes, I know it's blasphemy but you're in this for the long haul and when finances are better you can step up to our expensive Nikon glassware!)
I will also agree with a previous poster that if $$$ is REALLY tight, consider a refurbished D610 rather than my beloved 750, because you will get more bang for your buck...
Let us know your final decisions, BetterPHpro! ---Greenmachine

Of course , so would I it's a better camera all around , according to the garu , and it's ff and a refurbished d610 would cost less than
A d500 and flash ,video ,two camera card slots ??

1st of all I do not know exactly what you wish to shoot. I would say this without any knowledge of that, I would NOT buy a D600, D610, D7000, or a D7500.

If you have DX lenses, I would even try the D7100. If price is a major consideration, buying a Nikon refurbished D7100 or D7200 on Adorama with a VIP membership and get 90 day Nikon warranty + the balance of a year from Adorama. If you have the DX lenses & the need for fast action & have plenty of money, go for the D500. Understand that with the D500, you will also have to go for the new technology XQD memory cards & reader. You will also not have a flash on the D500, but you could carry an SB300 in your pocket. The D500 also does not have Easy ISO which you can setup on the D7100 & D7200. This is important to me with the way I shoot.

If you aren't restricted to DX lenses, and want to go the FX route, I would go with the D750.

Just so you know, I have owned the D80, D300, D5100, D7000, D7100, D7200, & D500 in the Nikon DSLR world & have friends that have had the D600, D610, & D750. Some of my friends have switched to the Sony world from Canon & are happy, but I wouldn't have any recommendations there.

And who would take you serious , with the listing of the cameras you listed here , I just see someone who can't make up his mind and
Get a grip on his buying habits,

D750 with 24-120 f4 ED VR kit lens. Have seen some real low prices lately and the zoom is very sharp when stopped down a bit although it has some distortion at both zoom limits. Can be corrected in post processing. Fast autofocus and Very good high ISO performance. Cactus flower shot with older AI manual focus 105mm Micro Nikkor f4 hand held 1/4000 f8 105mm ISO5000 with a D750 in A mode.

Nice flower shot! That AI manual focus 105mm Micro Nikkor is a classic, and it used to be my favorite portrait lens...
Just curious: Are you mostly a RAW or JPEG shooter? --Greenmachine

I'm guessing the low light is so good Nikon decided it did not need a flash.

More likely, Nikon realized people who were serious enough to get the D500 wouldn't use the pop-up for lighting.

I've been evaluating 2 Nikon D500's for over a week and with the right (fast) lenses, could do all I need for work with it.
The issue would be high-quality wider angle DX lenses are not as plentiful as for FX.
Tough choice!

Definitely check out the D750 at B&H!
It is currently $1499 ($500 off) AND they throw in the Nikon grip, a good SD card and a spare (off brand) battery! That's a total saving of $960!!!

www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082599-REG/nikon_d750_dslr_camera_body.html

Get the D750 with the 24-120 f4 kit lens for $1999 and save $1100! AND they still add in the grip, battery and card goodies for a total saving of around $1560!!!

www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082604-REG/nikon_d750_dslr_camera_with.html

I mentioned to the B&H photo guy that a newer model must be on its way and he thinks that the new body will probably include a couple upgrades but really only 4K video would be of note.

Just checked, they are now on back order, that tells me that it is one heck of a bargasm, lol

Happy shooting,

-TJ

Goofy - You just made an uniformed amateur mistake. As a serious pro photographer I use built in flashes on a regular bases. Their low output is perfect for quick fill-flash duty. You may not use slaved flashes but, serious photographers do. The built-in flash makes a fine optical trigger.

The 500 is a fine specialized sports camera with world class subject tracking and very high frame rates. The D7200 is sharper, has "U" settings, and a built in flash. It is the better general use body.

It is rather funny when you run into a guy sporting an 810 or 500 and an attitude towards anyone with, what he considers, a cheaper and inferior camera. Those fellows invariably are low-knowledge-photographers. Buying a 500 won't make you into a serious photographer.

Good Call: As a newspaper freelancer here in the Windy City who depends on a 750 AND a 7200 (BOTH sporting flip flashes) you're preachin to the choir here!
