I only speak Canon, so I can't help you with your decision. I did want to express my sympathy. I've been through that. It's a terrible experience. When I lost everything, I had to have a camera immediately. I repurchased the one I used the MOST and worked on the balance later. I ended up using the insurance money from two of the cameras to purchase an entirely new one.

I hope your insurance company is better than mine was. It took me 1-1/2 years to settle my claim! Everything I had to buy immediately had to come out of my own reserves!

If you like wildlife and BIF there is only one choice. The D500 with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens. Buy it fast so you can start capturing your desires. My second lens choice would be the Nikon 16-80 DX for your landscape. If you need something in the middle add the 18-200 DX Nikon.

THERE IS ALWAYS MORE THAN ONE CHOICE. When you read a dogmatic statement I suggest you disregard it.

My suggestion would be for a D500, while it's still on sale with a free grip, a 300/4PF, a 70-200 of some sort and perhaps a 150-600 Sigma Sport or the Nikon 200-500 depending upon what you want to put into this. I'd definitely start with the D500. Best of luck.

About 2007 my pickup was broke into and my camera bag and a few other items were stolen. The thief got my Fuji S2 and a couple of Nikon kit lenses, flash, batteries and what ever the thief got out of my glove box. My replacement policy allowed me to replace equipment with the a new S2 or S3 (if available. They weren't. They figured in for a new S5. I took the money and added some more to buy a Nikon D700. I had to come up with receipts the purchases of enough camera lenses and prove I actually had that equipment at that time and a police report of the incident.
At the time of the theft I hated the thief. After replacing my dx equipment with fx equipment I realized the event really allowed me to make a major upgrade at the right time. For me the theft came at the right time. However what is really important is that it is your opportunity to replace an aging D7100 with a top of the line D500 if you want to stay with dx or a D750 or D810 if you want to upgrade to fx.

Insurance Proposal: $5755 - is this replacement cost. Just checked B&H for new D500 here are prices.
Nikon D500 (Body Only): $1800 Kit with 16-80mm Lens: $2400
Nikon 70-200mm Lens: $2000
So if you got the D500 Kit with 16-80mm plus the Nikon 70-200mm that would be $4400 leaving you $1355 for replacement of any other lens, camera bag, filters, etc. That's not much.
Do your homework, decide what you want, add up TOTAL cost to replace all you lost and show that to insurance company. You should get the best possible NEW camera, lens, etc. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

We where only gone for 2 hours. The people reaspondable where caught two weeks later, after they had gotton rid of everything. Talk about a sick feeling.
One reason for such a low insurance offer is the 300mm 2.8 Was a gift and I did not have the receipt. But I'm going back to the insurance company Monday, I have obtained a copy of the receipt from my mother who bought it, and put together a better more accurate replacement valuation.

Many people don't understand that there are two main options for insurance coverage on camera gear. One where you keep receipts and show them when you experience a loss, and they depreciate value based on date of purchase. You don't want that one.

The better is to bounce for a little more $$ and get the replacement cost type of policy. I had a used D700 that I had gotten in trade for some photo services, and at the time I suffered it's loss, a 14-24, a 24-70 and a 150 macro. I had replacement cost coverage - I went to B and H ordered all new gear - completely covered including my parking while I shopped at B&H and the mileage to get it and get back. My out of pocket was the $250 deductible. If I didn't have an urgent need, I could have shopped a bit for a used copy of each of the lost items - the insurance company pays based on your loss against your premiums. It's entirely up to you to decide what to do with the check.

Wow! That's a big lost in camera gear. I had my car stolen from a parking lot many years ago. I did get another car. A good thief will always be opportunistic. That's how they survive. Glad you had some insurance coverage. Good luck in recovering from your lost.

I am in the process of deciding what to replace my recently stolen gear with. Lost in the theft was, D7100, D7000, D5200, Tamron 70-200 2.8, sigma 150-500, nikkor 18-55, 55-300, 300mm 2.8, 80-400mm.
I loved the 7100, so thinking of the 7200 Or 500. But, cost may come into play so ff may not be a choice.
My main desire is wildlife, BIF, some landscape.
Thanks for any advice.
So,,, what suggestions can anyone offer if you where in my shoes?

I didn't do it. Why not another 7100? It was a high water mark until the D500 came along.

The D500, a prototype of the D5, is the best crop sensor camera available today.

Come on Gene, you know good and well that 28-300 is no where near the 200-500 in terms of image quality. Don't mislead the guy.

I have both and agree completely. I use both on D800 and D5300. The image quality of the 200-500 far exceeds the 28-300. Plus the VR is at least twice as good.

But the 200-500 weighs a ton so there is a place for the 28-300 on my shelf. If I want to only take one lens it is often the 28-300.

Hey Zen, sorry for your loss. I was in the same boat as you last year. Someone stole my D7100, 18-140, 70-300,18-55, 50mm and a lot of misc stuff out of my car. Luckily it fell under my homeowners/auto insurance. I submitted $ 2800 and they sent me $2500.So I was pretty happy with that and just replaced my 7100, 18-140 and purchased a 35mm. Good luck to you.
