I would appreciate it mightily if one of the many arborists on this site could identify this tree.

The bark reminds me of maple but a shot of one of the leaves would do wonders.

Definitely not a maple, but you are right that I should have done a close up of a leaf. I thought it was dead but it has just started sprouting leaves. My son and daughter in law just bought a house here and this huge tree is in their backyard.

I was discussing a tree that the council had planted in the street. A neighbour came by and my friend asked her if she could identify the tree.

She said "Of course, it is one of those trees that the Council plants in the street".

we are none the wiser.

It appears to be of the Hickory family, but not sure which variety......

That is a hard one, but it looks so familiar. A leaf close-up would help. Are there any pods, seeds, flower remnants around the base that could help with ID? You could try a search for Florida tree species if you are unable to get your answer on the forum.

The leaves, such as they are, look a bit like a honey locust, as does the bark.

Does the tree have compound or simple leaves? Bark and shape look like a very old Locust of some kind. Show us a leaf.

Fourlocks

I thank you all for your responses. I will shoot a copy close up of the leaf of the tree the next time I go over my son's house.

I don't know what the tree is even though I have seen them before. However I think you are going to have a fun neighbor.

Very pretty shot, Nim, but I can't help you with it's ID.
